I have always been a huge fan of WoD vampire and werewolves. Playing in a game myself and having both a Gangrel and a Bone Gnawer garou I've always enjoyed their skirmishes.

I want to start off with the stuff that I like. I love the intensity of the piece, and the almost "classic" wolf-man look that the Gangrel has. The expression is intense and fierce, I love how any minuet he gonna pop claws...or blow Aegis. The colors and contrast works and the feeling of a brutal and eternal struggle is real and apparent. Over all I can feel the violence in this piece.

As for the things that need work. The most jarring thing about this artwork, is the werewolf. It's ugly and too surreal. It's ears are non-existent, jaw is out of proportion and nose is too small. I hate it's eyes it's not canine or human. It's not a werewolf but something else to me. The thumb looks broken.

The Gangrel is ok, but bright red splotch over his eyes is out of place and while it brings attention to his face, it competes with the surreal super creepy lizard eyes of the werewolf.

I suggest work on canine anatomy and play with how wolves look before you exaggerate them. Get some White Wolf werewolf books and they have some sweet illustrations of Crinos werewolves. The can give some good ways to execute the werewolf. So he looks like a monstrous wolf-man. And not a freaky lizard wolf thing.

At the time [95/96] I did this batch of vampire art I was playing WOD and running a fun and lengthy campaign. I'm a hardcore vamp fan but don't really care too much for WOD werewolves. To me, this is a pic of just before the vampire turns the wolf into mincemeat. The flash of red isn't supposed to be a specific power, more showing that things are kicking in and something's going to happen. My intent was to use a werewolf for artistic variety, have him bigger than the vamp and obviously vicious to make an imposing opponent. Plus I wanted to achieve the furry look without linework or cross hatching. Was trying to make more monster than animal, and definitely wasn't worried with similarities to a real wolf. You used the word surreal, and that's exactly the thing I was going for. More of a wolf-ish monster than anything quasi-realistic. Great critique, thanks for taking the time!

Great job on the coloring and shading.
The werewolf, in particular, has the feeling of being made from a woodcut block print.

Although the large amount of black used could have overpowered the image, I think it works very well here.

thanks! I try to color in solid shapes to match the inks. I'm just happy I got that furry look without any crosshatching or line work. I joined DA to inspire more art and so far it has. After looking at this stuff I'm thinking maybe another werewolf piece sometime.

Your coloring technique works very well.
It'll be interesting to see how it develops over time.
