Description 1. scraps

She lives as a scavenger, picking up life from people's
trash, warmth from deserted fires and clothes from rags.
Kariko lives on the by-products of society and it was
really all she needed.

2. donation
"Here," the old woman's frail fingers shook as she offered
the wad of bills. "Take it, use it,"
She shook her dirty hair, smiling. "It's better for you, Grandma,"
The old woman watched as the girl walked away, the donation
fluttering in her hands, reflecting quietly.
Maybe just giving her a smile had been enough.

3. rain
The weather that suited wandering best was rain.
Few people were out, and what few kept their heads down and walked on.
All she knew was that her feet were moving, her hair felt wet and
plastered on her face, her jacket was warm, and everything felt the same.
It felt alive.

4. cities
Cities were all basically the same to her: crowded
and very, very alone.
Except for one bright, pulsating mass of sin full of
wonderful people.

5. snow
Her tongue slips out, tasting the snowflake.
It's soft and wet, melting on contact.
She smiles and closes the hotel window, and
slips into the warm, warm bed.

6. cars
"GET THE FUCK OUT THE WAY, BITCH!"
"WHAT THE HELL ARE YOU DOING!?"
                    HONK HONK.
                            Splash.
                    "ASSHOLE!"
Screech of tires.

Kariko hated cars.

7. meals
Soup kitchens were full of friends.
Diners were always open, always warm.
Homeless shelters were cold and wet.

But the best meals were in Carbon.

8. cold
        "Kari?"
She opens frost layered eyelashes and eyelids to
see wide, haggard brown eyes.
        "Yeah?"
She's engulfed by blankets and voices and her eyes slip close again.
The next time, she's in a hospital.

9. warmth
Some cities, she found unexpected friends, and then, she goes
to some cities, that she's visited before, and the warmth is still there.
It was nice to find it.

10. quiet
In black and white dreams, silent movie house thriller,
she's yanking out gray wires from dark, dark skin, black blood
hits the screen in a silent splash.
A white hall jiggles in front of a camera, a wide light grey
window and falling, falling....
        Always in silence.
And it's no wonder she wakes screaming.

11. sounds
Cities were a cacophony of sounds:
                    tires squealing on pavement
            hellos, goodbyes, arguments and sentiments
        trains on tracks
thousands of shoes making solid contact

She enjoyed it, sitting in the small, dingy diner.

12. animals
    Mutts were her favorites.
("C'mere, boy!" She laughed, running along the track.
He was huge and shaggy and limped, and loved her.)
Alleycats, she dined with.
(Kariko snatched the meat up from the discarded plates,
and nibbles a piece off before the slinking gray cat leapt
down from it's perch.)

And she hated leaving them behind.

13. people
People were all the fundamentally same.
She knew this much too well.

14. mizumi
She walks into the diner and sits on the bar stool.
        "May I have a cheeseburger?"
    "Kariko?"
She turns and sees Mizumi, wearing sunglasses in a green
apron, shivering.
Kariko is then hugging her for all she's worth, hunger
forgotten.
        "I found you!"

15. hana
Hana's taller, a little more sallow. Her hair is longer,
and there's the beginning of crow's feet. A little girl is beside her,
gripping her hand tightly.
Kariko hugs them both before she and Hana's tears come.

16. nibi
The back room is very warm and it smells
like rose.
    "You're back."
Kariko stands and hugs her slowly, Nibi's taller and she leans down.
    They kiss softly, and part.
"Stay with me while you're here?"
Kariko smiles, leaning her head on the woman.
"Alright. I won't stay long, though."
"I don't expect any less,"
What Nibi doesn't know, is that this is the last time Kariko
will visit.
