Although in the future Slender ends up having a softspot for cats, as a kid he didn't really recognize pets as living beings... regardless he got a good scolding from Splendor afterward. This just comes to show that they're not ready for a pet yet. They had to give away the pets to other families(by leaving it in their doorstep) despite Splendor's want for one.
