its taking me longer to work on the Artist block flash tutorial than I thought so I thought I would at least make this one since I can make this one quickly since its more informative than a visual aid.

Gathering references the old way

gathering references there is a cheap and effective way of finding what you like without relying on your computer allot. You can find allot of references in anything from newspapers, magazines, books, or even print off images you find from the internet.

-Pretty much like scrap booking you look through the sources above and cutting out the images to refer to them if you need to know what something looks like or if your drawing something and you want to keep it within a certain theme and want examples of what you can do

-You can go to an artstore and pick up a clear cover portfolio display book(to keep you stuff organized). You can use a plastic bin or some other kind of storage unit to place your clippings but it gets unorganized after a while.

*make sure if your cutting out anything make sure its not still being used by someone*

Additional Tips

-if your image is missing some parts or the quality isn't as great as found from a magazine or on the computer its about improvising. If parts of someone are missing try and find someone in the same position and adding to that image. If its a low quality image and you need to know what the finer details of skin look like or texture of jeans you can look that up separately online or other references you collected.

-Old Calenders work well especially if they are within a certain theme that your looking for so if you have some of landscapes or animals they might be worth hanging on to them.

-At some grocery stores they get rid of expired newspapers so if you work at a place like that you can get your hands on allot of different references that way.

-Some bookstores have weekly free magazines Some featuring art, housing etc they also can be worth picking up.

The New way: Using your computer

Probably one of the better ways of collecting references is over the computer. Its allot easier to look up what your looking for and get a ton of references that way than at times.

-make folders on your computer and name them differently depending on what your looking for to keep your stuff organized.

Additional tips

-Google as well as art sites such as Deviant art are a good way to find examples of art

- use control+f and type in a key word your looking for can make web searching faster

-You can save all your stuff on your usb and take it with you anywhere if need be.

-You can use Da even as a place to store all your references by going into your favs>edit>New collection and naming those differently according to what references your looking for over da.

*Don't copy other peoples artwork or use images without the persons permission*
