Feedback Corner #8
The framing looks great - the thick greenery of the other plants lets us viewers concentrate on your main flower without getting too distracted.Β You did great on the sharpness!Β It's cool that you seem to have shot closed-down enough that I see that there's water in the middle of the flower.Β The only thing that's off is the white balance - looks like a little too much red where it shouldn't be.Β It's an easy fix with whichever post-production program you might use.Β It's a gorgeous lilly!Β I'm definitely looking forward to leaving this craptastic winter behind.

Thank you so much never new what color cast was until now. Spent 25 minutes looking into it. It wasn't that much but a slight red was there. I'll probably go never noticing it again in the future due to my colorblindness but if I find one where I can check I will fix it if I remember. I'm also going to save this comment to force me to remember.

I know but atleast the snow might leave some good photos. If it's 55 below no photographer should dare go outside.

Its not bad if you put it in a case in the cold and bring it inside. Don't open it till its adjusted. Half hour or so should do.

Yeah unfortunately it was like one of only half of the stuff that actually worked in the package I bought. It was a $40 package and claimed to have a professional tripod. Yeah found out it's the worst reviewed tripod on Amazon and people claim it's not worth the $5 they paid for it in stores and broke the first day they used it. The mini tripod it came with was junk as well. The charger and batteries that came with it were junk and never worked. The screen protectors didn't stay on a day because they were not precut. The stuff that I have tried that has worked is the high speed memory card transferer, cleaning cloth, and bag. The cloth they made.

Wheel Barrow looks silver. The center looks yellow. Flower outside looks red with an orangish stripe. Grass and leaves are varying shades of green.

Then you see it fairly accurately, I think.Β
So you are able to spot that you have a nice color composition.

No not at all. Not only are my color sensors off I really lack an art sensor. I rented a book on how to improve photography and it was like reading another language. I didn't understand it. I take my photography pretty much on gut and facts. Such as try and look for framing, lines, and thirds. I need to add more but really I mostly get lucky.

Thank you. Okay so my main thing besides lines, thirds, and framing, is there any other thing I can do or look for that can be sort of a fact base thing instead of feeling thing? I mean thirds that is math. Lines that is geometry. Framing is kind of a hybrid of those two maths I think.

McCracken-Art In reply to CRG-Free [2014-01-03 07:15:06 +0000 UTC]
My short answer is no. Because you are asking for a left brain answer to a right brain problem. Art IS mostly a "feeling" thing.Β
The long answer is yes.Β
By framing, I assume you mean what I call composition. The "thirds" thinking is helpful, but not written in stone. You want the eye to move around the picture but not get lost or "fall off".Β
The yellow "lines" in this photo have a nice rhythm. If you go back to a photo like the one that was all green- it is very hard to find something to focus on. Β Or a Christmas bulb where the eye gets "stuck".
If I see any handy tips I'll send them your way. The best photography advice I ever recieved was from Kodak, of all places. Make sure your subject really is the subject. Β most people don't do this, especially when photographing people and animals. Β I think many of your photos are just dandy- you have learned well what you read.Β

Okay that really does help. Make sure the subject is the subject and for more then one interesting spot such as to roam.

I'm glad it helps. If you google composition of Renaissance masters it should show you some lines etc... You will see that they put great thought into it, yet it will give you an intuitive sense of what you are striving for. Triangles were very big.Β
