Description

                                                                                         Dragonfly

And when the roses are half-bud soft flowers
And lovely as the king of flies has come
It was a fleeting visit, all too brief
In three short minutes, he had been and gone

He rested there upon an apple leaf
A gorgeous opal crown sat on his head
Although the garden is a lovely place
Was it worthy of so fine a guest

                                                                    Oh...
                                                                    Oh...
                                                                    Oh...
                                                                    Oh...

                                                                    Dragonfly, dragonfly ...

Thank you so much - an image I'd wanted to capture for ages but not managed (or even got close!)

It probably isn't       I think there is a great element of luck and maybe patience involved...

Looks like it spotted potential prey.

That right there is a gorgeous snapshot. Absolutely amazing.

It was flying within the confines of a patio area, you can see one of the walls in the background. I guess this area attracted other flies or midges

So beautiful, you must have spent a lot of time to take such a perfect shot!
Well done

It was a relativity sort but intense period of concentration. The dragonfly came into a patio area for only five minutes or so. It was still a difficult capture with only one or two successful shots

My pleasure.
It is not easy to catch flying insects like this.

Coincidentally, I've captured a hoverfly in much the same position - maybe a little more side on. It's still in my 'pending file' as it lacks a little of the artistic element but perhaps I'll submit it someday soon. Btw, thank you for highlighting my dragonfly shot on your submission, that is so generous

As I've already said - mostly luck      I read advice on nature photography once that said, 'Don't chase the target around, wait for it to come to you. Know your prey'. Not quite that easy when they are in flight but it helped. At least I got it

They are unsurpassed as predators of the insect world. Beautiful in appearance and movement, as well as being deadly hunters

cricketumpire In reply to LiliaLaurent [2017-10-08 05:53:12 +0000 UTC]

These fellows are more difficult to capture in flight than the humming bird hawk moths. The moths, at least, are found in numbers and focus on flowers even if they flit between them. The dragonflies seem totally random but are presumably chasing insects on the wing

Yeah, I knew that.. I've got 1 or 2 shots like this in my gallery..out of about 100 deleted pics!

cricketumpire In reply to natureguy [2017-10-08 05:28:11 +0000 UTC]

They 'cruise' and 'zooooom' to the total disadvantage of the photographer but I'm alarmed the frustration leads to sinus problems.
I do hope you are fully recovered now

Seriously, two aerial shots in ten years is a good return in my limited experience. You have my total empathy but only a hundred shots? I did thirty odd for this one!

natureguy In reply to cricketumpire [2017-10-08 09:49:47 +0000 UTC]

yeah, I was using my 600mm lens to get them....

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

cricketumpire In reply to natureguy [2017-10-08 12:24:10 +0000 UTC]

Doesn't that make it even more difficult to follow them    I had the macro 105mm lens on for humming bird moth photographs when the dragonfly turned up. He was flying close to me and momentarily hovering which helped but the successful shot was from ten feet or more and then massively cropped

natureguy In reply to cricketumpire [2017-10-08 16:02:06 +0000 UTC]

yeah it does, but most of the time I'm out shooting waterfowl in the marsh, and a dragonfly pic is just a target of opportunity...

cricketumpire In reply to natureguy [2017-10-08 17:08:24 +0000 UTC]

Yep, I would have probably done better with my 55-300mm zoom but who knows

We must take the opportunities as they arise

I guess they are the 'raptors' of the insect world. Beautiful but deadly, able to hunt other insects in the air...
