The Murkwilds. A cold, unnatural blight on the world. Once, a great city of magic and secrets stood in its place: Laz'erous (La-zer-us). It was filled with elegant gardens and buildings. Tall shining towers and spires with enchanted crystals floating at their peaks decorated the city's horizon. It was a place of beauty and serenity. But one early morning the scouts on the northern wall spotted something they never expected to see: an army. Within the hour the army smashed against the city's north wall. The defenders held firm, and the army seemed to fall apart under their stinging arrows and elemental blasts. Then all at once, the defender's ranks started to disintegrate, screams and shrieks echoing from behind the city's towering walls. Wraiths had infiltrated the city from behind. Savage and cunning creatures born of living shadow, there exists no shield or gate to hold them back. The Wraiths cleaved their way through the outer wall's protectors, and the outside army blasted its way in. Those slain by the Wraiths rose again and transformed into Wraiths as well, turning on their former allies. Within the next few hours, the army ravaged the city, obliterating everything and destroying everyone.
The ruthless and unprovoked attack became known as 'The Day of Shattered Magic'. There are no known survivors.

After the devastating siege of Laz'erous, the other dragon kingdoms rallied their forces and braced for imminent attack. But that attack never came. As the years ticked on by, the kingdoms began to call off their armies, and they eventually settled into a quiet peace. Brave adventurers tried to enter the ruined city to examine the extent of the damage, but the city was gone.
The resulting blight became known as The Murkwilds, though some prefer to call it the Shadowlands. The once rolling grasslands had become barren wastelands, with dead twisted trees sticking out of the wounds in the earth. The beautiful lakes and watery glades turned into massive grey, muddy swamps; the thick, sluggish muck sapping the heat out of living things. The very air is a sicking poison, causing lethargy and hallucinations. The ground becomes more dangerous further in, with steep sudden crevices and an unnatural darkness making the ground treacherous. At the Wild's heart rises a twisted mass of crystallized darkness, a cruel reflection of Laz'erous's iconic spires. This is the dark fortress that Diz'ra is rumored to have made for herself. The fortress's evil spires pulse with darkness, causing a foul miasma to veil it. No one has ever gotten any closer, as Wraiths patrol just inside the wall of dark fog.
The only ones to come and go as they please are those of evil intent. Wraiths meet them at the edge of the Wilds and escort them in towards the heart. Diz'ra herself has not been seen since the siege, and though some speculate that she has passed from the world, others know better than to underestimate the power of the darkness.

In case you are wondering, Discord was renamed Diz'ra (pronounced like it is spelled) because I got tired of people affiliating her with MLP
