This is fabulous....seriously....fabulous!!!!! I have the photo...and just comparing them.....it's like someone put the photo in photoshop and tinkered with filters....it's amazing that you can draw like this with just your hands!!!!!! First off...excellent job with the shading...the contrast of the face is superb...it's incredible the depth that the viewer sees with just the black and white....he looks so natural in that pose...and actually i really like the background!

I can't believe this is your favourite out of my three newest deviations. It took like a fifth of the time. That said, there's a simplicity to using graphite that means I can get pretty much everything how I want it... except for the freakin' background! Maybe I should stop using mechanical pencils for large spaces.

I'm not sure if it's particularly good etiquette to give crit on a gift, but I think I remember you saying something in a journal about how you wanted more critique along with the gushing comments, so, here goes:
Umm... Okay, I'm really looking and I can't find much of anything worth mentioning, so I'll just ask what's up with the lines at some places in the drawing? Like, on his right thumb and beside his ear.
Other than those it looks just about perfect. I really like the spotlight effect in the background, too.

I know what you mean about critiquing gifts. I don't usually do it, but as gifts are all I'm gonna be drawing for the next few months people should probably hit me. Not literally.
Well, I shade with lines instead of circles (because I'm lazy) and if I press very softly it generally turns out okay. But sometimes I spazz out and attack the paper, and it won't rub out. My own fault, I know. Hence the sporadic lines. I'm doing a pretty halfassed job of trying to improve on that.
