Description Another Gazette fanart. All I used for this was a mechanical pencil (as you can see). I love the way in pencil drawings you make each individual stroke, and there must be thousands altogether, building up to actually look like something.

"Do you usually draw with your eyes closed?"
The question was unexpected. Tai blinked. "Princess?"
"That's what made me come here to you," Antian explained patiently. "I saw you from across the court, and you were alternately concentrating on your art and sitting there with your eyes tightly shut... and sometimes your hands were moving on the paper even when your eyes were shut. This intrigues me."
Tai smiled. "I close my eyes so that I can see," she said.
It was Antian's turn to look surprised. "You close your eyes to see?"
"I cannot draw from life," Tai said. "I can see the butterflies on the flowers, but before I can draw them with my hand I have to close my eyes and draw them in my mind." - The Secrets of Jin-Shei.

And that's how it is.

oh boy, this pic makes me only with mechanical pencil, ne? haha, by now, your skill does not surprise me, but i'm still amazed at what you can do. just out of curiosity, how long have you been drawing? especially the portraits and had you taken any art classes or stuff like that before?? once again, i apologize deeply if this has already been asked before

Yeah, mechanical pencil was my best friend in the beginning. But that was when I had a soft-leaded mech pencil, and it died, and its replacements are much too hard to use for too many areas of a drawing. It's a pity.

Um... I've been drawing since I could close my fist around a crayon. My mother used to buy me comics every week, and I copied the characters. Then I started to draw cartoon characters, ad then my dad showed me how to draw an apple using only light and shadow. That was my first realism, and I was... about six. But I didn't like realism. So I carried on with cartoons, until a few years ago. I guess I started it properly about two years ago, when I was your age.

I took art classes for a few years at school, but they were really basic, and I didn't learn anything I hadn't already taught myself at home. We did stuff like drawing a ball, a cylinder, a cube, and adding shading. Practice with perspective, drawing trees and buildings on a street. Then we finally drew from life. We did very basic figure study in class, and drew wine bottles and stuff. Then we painted our old school buildings with watercolours. :3 That was all.

We never did real portraits at school. I did that from scratch all by myself. The last time my art teacher saw my drawings, he told me I should stop drawing 'fantasy' and start doing realism. >.> Like any one genre is superior to another.

My parents bought me some books on how to draw, like different shading techniques, proportion, how to layer colours and so on. Nothing I couldn't have found online, if I'd had the internet back then. But I improved so much in the few years I've been on dA. Everyone's so inspiring and motivating.

wow, thank you so much for going into detail about your drawing history^^ that's very interesting, basically you self-taught yourself with some teaching but very little. lol, i had an art teacher in middle school tell me the same thing. until recently, i've only done "fantasy" or anime drawings so yeah, realism is no better than fantasy.

haha, yeah, that's why i decided to join dA. i wanted to be motivated by other artists. plus art geeks seem to be cooler people anyways

Pretty much all Ruki's pictures make me want to drool all over myself. I can't believe I'm not dehydrated.

It's the worst picture I've ever seen. Like, ever. Ever, ever. I hate you.

XD; I kid; I kid!! Although... I wasn't joking about the 'I hate you' part... I really do hate you. And envy you. Gah. Talented person... >.>;

The masochist in me wishes you were serious. And the egotist in me is glad you envy me. Wow, I'm torn. Well, I do draw for several hours everyday... so probably not much of it is talent. More like drive and obsession, leading to a lot of practice. And thank you again.

JFaith In reply to Crimefish [2005-10-26 00:32:47 +0000 UTC]

Yes, but practice DOES make perfect. TT_TT I hardly ever practice anymore. And when I do have the time to, I get lazy and impatient and the result is...umm...deformed piccies.

Crimefish In reply to JFaith [2005-10-26 00:43:49 +0000 UTC]

I'm lazy and impatient too... I refuse to spend more than three hours on a pencil drawing, or more than about eight hours on computer art. I should probably force myself to slow down and do better stuff.

Aw yeah! It's hard to find anyone who has even heard of them. ;_; It's hard being a fan of indies jrock. Even if I offer mp3s, no one wants to hear it 'cause if people don't talk about it 24/7 it must suck.

I had heard Gazette, but my first impression of them was that they were a Dir en Grey rip off. ^^: Now I love them.

Crimefish In reply to ShuichiKigai [2005-10-29 17:58:14 +0000 UTC]

Yeah, they reminded me of Diru as well... and then when I was watching the Zetsu PV, my brother thought they were Dir en grey. But The more I learn about them, the more obvious it is that they're very different.

I'm jealous, that's not how I draw with mechanical pencils at all. I do a lot of blending with rolled up paper because I can't shade any other way. T_T

He looks so good! I love his eye. It's so nice... I'm so jealous... You made me wanna go draw to see if I can do it that way instead. I'm totally faving this, cos, you know... ta da, inspiration. <3 I love it.

Crimefish In reply to FrozenIsh [2005-10-26 17:29:07 +0000 UTC]

Thanks a lot. I used to use mechanical pencil until I realised smudge-shading with a 4B looks way better... but since then I've gotten used to pressing ever so lightly, so I wanted to see what I could do with mech now. And the whole point of this drawing is also to see the individual pencil marks.

His lips are a bit too full, aren't they? I just noticed because Rukis lips I like the most because they aren't so full. I like the hair and the stuff around his eye... is it from the No.666 PV? I guess there I saw it at noon this day that he had something on his eye like that. The necklace is really amazing, my sis would freak out and buy it. Really looks cool! Wish I had a Ruki at home...
Great work! I'm waiting for moooore! You know I love your works, don't cha?

I see... in the picture you used his lips really look full, must be the pose, make-up or perspective. But you are absolutely right! Thank you, so I say the different: Great job, espacially the lips!

I try to do a Ruki when I finished my Tero maybe, too.

I don't know if they're too full. You've been looking at him for longer than I have, so you're probably right. This is the picture I used: [link]
Yeah, it looks like [No.666] but I think the colour scheme in it was red? And this is light blue. Could still be it though. And thanks. I think I'm gonna do a coloured Ruki fanart soon. He looks so amazing in his makeup.
