Description Yay I'm finally posting some photos of this thing! She's been finished for weeks but I took some photos over the weekend. Moar yay!
The moment I saw the Fluttershy "design a pony" toy I knew I had to paint it as Tyra. It really has been the only G4 MLP toy I've been drawn to so far. I like the larger size of this one, and as I'm a complete n00b about re-rooting hair and whatnot, I liked the fact I could just paint it. Seemed perfect for a beginner, and that is what I am.

She has been hand painted with enamel paint. She took countless hours... I forget how many exactly. The brush was the smallest detail brush I could find and her leg feathering and rose were added with Apoxie Sculpt. Her cutie mark is a purple chocolate chip cookie. Those who know Ty will understand why.

I'd love to make more of these so I'm open for commissions, but I have no idea how much to charge I guess just contact me and we'll work something out.

I still can't believe how smooth she looks and how perfectly you got the markings and edges of the markings, you must have a really steady hand!

Thankyou! It did take a very steady hand and I also used a teeny tiny detail brush for the edges of the markings, so that helped a lot.

Agh!!! It looks AMAZING! It's so smooth and seamless and LOL that face is too precious I don't know much about MLP but I think Fluttershy's hairstyle works well with Tyra, she looks great!

Thankyou so much! I agree, I was originally going to use the Rainbow Dash mold, but I thought Flutter's hair suited Ty better as well. I'm glad you like it!

That is bloody well freaking adorable. I dislike the new MLP toys, for me they do not hold the charm like the OLD ones from my childhood but you have made this one very likeable. Great job!

Thanks! I wholeheartedly agree about the g4 line, it's been terribly disappointing so far. This is the only official mold I've taken a liking to, and I'm looking forward to working with more. Hopefully some earlier gen stuff as well.

Ooohh yours turned out great!!! Is her cutie mark a cookie ? I love the added feathering you did! It really makes the model look less like Fluttershy and more like Trya

I wish I would have stripped the paint off like you did too I stripe all the paint off my customs now and it just makes life sooo much easier, I don't know why I didn't think about it when I did mine (maybe one day over the rainbow I will get the Rainbow Dash model and paint it up to be Kirara again).

And you really should try rehairing, its actually SUPER easy and in my opinion fun. If you wanted to see some videos or tutorials that really helped me out just let me know

Ohh and I hope you don't mind that I whored my self out a bit here for anyone looking for MLP commissions. I can't work right now and these ponies are helping me keep my sanity and pay my medial bills

Crimson-Mane In reply to LittleKirara [2013-06-27 05:10:55 +0000 UTC]

Yus her cutie mark is a purple cookie It has been for a looong time, way before G4 took off. I didn't strip the paint off, I just painted over it, which is why I used enamel paint as it sticks wonderfully to the mold. It was really hard to cover up the black colouring in lines though, so I might take them off next time if I can. I would love to see some tut videos of rehairing as I have no clue about the process but I'm interested in trying it, so yes pleease! My next project is turning an RD mold into Derpy, then hopefully I can find the Luna mold and turn her into Cadance

The only problem I have is that it looks like someone asked me a question about doing custom characters and you just kind of butted in there, and now I'm confused. I don't mind what you did in your first comment but please refrain yourself from answering questions for me yourself (if that's what happened). I understand about needing money so it's okay this time
I'm sure you'd be pissed if I started advertising in your comments right?

LittleKirara In reply to Crimson-Mane [2013-06-27 14:32:10 +0000 UTC]

First off I wanted to apologize about that, I wasn't thinking and immediately regretted doing so, so please feel free to hide any comment from me, and once again I'm awful sorry it was wrong of me.

Anyways just a quick swipe with 100% Acetone will take any factory paint right off! (FYI, it also works for other models like Breyers and Schleich as well, it also helps loosen up glue as well)

As for videos I have found this one gal who is just a wealth of pony custom knowledge! ~okiegurl1981 She has a bunch of videos on youtube that are great www.youtube.com/user/okiegurl1... and trust me her techniques will save BUTT loads of time and frustration!

My advice is don't bother with the needle and thread technique, it will make you want to kill yourself and your pony. Use the rerooting tool! But don't buy one make one, seriously it will save you like 20 bucks if you just make one yourself and then you won't have to use any ones special needles you can just make your own for a fraction of the price. This is the tutorial I used to make my own www.monsterhighdolls.com/forum... Make sure you get an actual X-acto knife!!! I learned that the hard way when I bought a generic knock off brand.

Seriously you can get everything you need to make a custom brushable pony for under 20 US dollars at walmart (including the pony) except for the hair.

I use the same brand of tacky glue as okiegurl but mines the express dry version, in my experience it seems to work just as well it just makes it so you can brush and style the hair much faster.

Now as for where to get the hair, there are a few places out there but I've bought from two places that I can personally vouch for and those are DollyHair.com and www.retrodolls.co.uk/ Now believe it or not retrodoll ships faster even though the hair as to come all the way from Australia than DollyHair who is only two states over So considering the fact that you also live in Australia I would recommend RetroDolls. Both owners are really nice and will answer any question you have about the hair.

Umm most people will tell you that one 38inch Hank will do two ponies, but I personally usually use 3/4 of a Hank per pony but I think thats just because I really like my ponies to have thick long hair.

Another good place for advice from veteran pony makers is the MLP arena www.mlparena.com/

So seriously give it a shot! Even if you try and decide its not your thing, if you already own the paint then its not something thats going to cause you to lose a bunch of money.

Let me know if you have any issues or questions and I would love to see some WIP!

Lol no worries at all

So many useful tips! Thankyou so much! I got myself some acetone today and I'm going to start stripping back the RD design a pony ASAP, cause there's no way I want to deal with those black lines again... my god, I had to add so many more layers of paint to cover up those parts >_< I thought it was going to look awful but I managed to save it, still... I know better this time!
I saw a nice custom painted with acrylic paint recently, would you suggest that or should I stick to enamel? Acrylic is so much cheaper, but it's also thinner, so I'm wondering...

I had this Tyra custom on display at my market stall this weekend (she's become something of a mascot for me) and someone tried to buy her Wasn't expecting that! I had to keep her at the back of the table though as kids seemed to enjoy touching her with their grubby fingers... I'm sure you can understand the pain of seeing that

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

LittleKirara In reply to Crimson-Mane [2013-07-10 08:06:54 +0000 UTC]

Honestly, I only use acrylic paint. If your anything like me, you see how the paint looks on the first layer and feels the urge to gob that paint on that pony extra thick but whatever you do RESIST that urge! The key to good looking paint jobs on ponys is to actual water down your paint and apply thin layers (make sure you allow it to dry before adding another layer) thats how you get good looking ponys with no brush marks.

Ahh that would drive me crazy!!

OOh this character looks like fun, I'd be happy to pony-ize him

Is the Rainbow Dash mold okay for you? [link] I have two of them waiting to go. If you'd like Fluttershy I'd have to order one in for you, so that would take longer

Also how much would you be willing to spend? I'm thinking about charging around $60 + postage and handling. That includes the figure, it won't be any extra.

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

Kirin-Rosenbaum In reply to Crimson-Mane [2013-07-03 18:28:39 +0000 UTC]

Wow... it might take me two pay checks to afford sixty and will there be any additional shipping? Also do you have an image of the fluttershy model?

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

Crimson-Mane In reply to Kirin-Rosenbaum [2013-07-04 11:24:23 +0000 UTC]

I can take it down to $50 if you like. Would that make it easier for you? Yes shipping will be extra but I'm not sure how much that will cost yet. I can find out though. Are you in the US?

And here is the Fluttershy mold: [link] It's the one I used for Tyra here. They're bigger than the normal sized ponies.

Ok then, do you have a ref sheet of this character? Even just a picture of the cutie mark would be fine. I can't see it very clearly..

Shipping will cost an extra $10, so all up it's $60 AUD. I'll start your custom once I've received payment. My paypal is "payments@crimsonmane.com"

They'e making pantable toys? And the molded hair is good for those, as that has been one of the major things stopping me from making a custom of my character: I don't know anything about re-rooting either. I may have to shell out for one of these if they have it in winged unicorn...

👍: 0 ⏩: 3

Crimson-Mane In reply to VioletWhirlwind [2013-06-27 05:19:18 +0000 UTC]

They're a set or kit. Two sticker sheets and two markers come with the pony toy so you can colour it. Check the toy aisle in your department stores or ebay.
The Luna mold has a horn: [link] but I'm not the biggest fan of that one (the back legs look weird) I much prefer the Fluttershy and Rainbow Dash molds. It's too easy to attach a horn with Apoxie Sculpt.

They have a Luna model now www.hasbro.com/mylittlepony/en... But I haven't been able to find her any where in person (I would try Toys R Us if you really want to find her, thats probably your best bet). And re-rooting is actually not nearly as hard as it seems, in fact I kinda think its fun (I have one commission spot left if your interested fav.me/d68psdj)
