Background:

Katherine Chambers was the first and only female fighter pilot in the US Navy's VF-142 "Ghostriders" F-14 Tomcat squadron. An accomplished pilot and one of the squadron's ace pilots, she quickly gained a reputation as a hard working and determined pilot who knew when to fly patient and in control, and also when to push the envelope and take it up a notch. She favored the F-14D Super Tomcat as her air-frame of choice and served honorably with her RIO John "Angler" Bradford backing her up in the cockpit. Katherine always loved speed, and thought there was no better feeling in the world than pushing her F-14 to the limit, but finally fate came calling, putting her destiny on a new path. When the Rikti Invasion befell Earth, the VF-142 was one of the first squadrons in the air off the east coast of the United States. Before they could make it to Paragon City they were ambushed by a squadron of Rikti fighters, which proved to be their better through superior technology and firepower. Despite the odds, Katherine downed three of the Rikti fighters before she had to retreat to regroup with reinforcements.

Despite her orders to regroup, Katherine noticed a Rikti fighter pursuing what she at first thought was a surviving ally from her squadron. With only a few hundred rounds remaining in her vulcan cannon, she gave chase, and quickly found that the Rikti were chasing after a small and very advanced looking alien craft. Before she could get off a shot with her cannon, a second Rikti fighter flew in behind her and blew both her Tomcat and the alien craft to smithereens in a matter of seconds. Her RIO was killed instantly, but Katherine was sent clear of the blast, a strange tingling sensation filling her entire body as she began to fall toward the ocean beneath her, barely awake and not aware enough to pull her parachute. A sense of peace came over her as she fell, realizing she would not survive the plummet back to Earth, but happy that she was going to go out doing what she loved. As she neared the ocean's surface she suddenly heard the words "Rest child, you are safe now..." float through her mind, and then everything went dark.

When Katherine awoke she found herself lying on the shore, still in her flight suit and very much alive. She didn't have a scratch or a bruise on her and despite her perfect eyesight, she even felt like she could see even further and even more clearly than before. She slowly stood up and removed her helmet and looked at her hands, flexing her fists, feeling a newfound strength surging through her body. Before she could fully grasp what was happening the voice spoke to her again, informing her that it was a symbiotic alien entity that could grant incredible powers and abilities to its host, without causing them any harm. It told her of how the Rikti had attacked its planet and wiped out most of its kind, causing the survivors to flee into space looking for new hosts and allies. While it could no longer save its own planet, it refused to allow the Rikti to take another world. Her mind a whirlwind of thoughts, Katherine suddenly found herself clad in a silver and gray suit of what she could only describe as a flexible type of metallic armor. The entity quickly explained how it had bonded with her body, making her stronger and faster, gifting her incredible abilities that would allow her to fight back against the invading aliens and any who would threaten her planet. Now with the abilities to fly like a fighter jet and shoot fusion blasts out of her hands, Katherine took the name Tomcat, after her favorite fighter plane, and quickly took to the sky, ready to become the ace the Earth would need to survive the alien onslaught.

Following the end of the Rikti War, which saw the vile aliens defeated, Katherine returned to her native home of Steel City and took on a quiet job as a mild mannered military historian at the Steel City Museum.

Powers:

Supersonic Flight: Katherine can fly at speeds up to Mach 2, though her normal "cruising" speed is around 300 MPH.

Super Strength: Katherine can lift well over 30 metric tons with ease, and quite a bit more if she can put her speed behind her load. She has demonstrated lift thresholds well above 50 metric tons.

Fusion Blasts: Katherine can fire fusion blasts from her hands that have enough power to punch through the hull of a battleship with one hit. These blasts can drain her stamina if she uses them too often or too quickly.

Advanced Maneuvering: Katherine can move incredibly fast while flying and is also a very agile combatant, having reflexes that are much greater than those of a normal human.

Military Training: Katherine is a skilled tactician and a patient fighter. In addition, her military career offered her opportunities to be trained in a variety of hand to hand combat disciplines, making her a capable hand to hand fighter.

Near Invulnerability: Katherine's "Bio-Armor" can be summoned with a thought and is impervious to all but only the most advanced conventional weapons. Its alien tech allows it to absorb heavy impacts with very little kinetic energy travelling through to affect Katherine. She has taken and survived direct hits from tank shells and air-to-air missiles without as much as a scratch. Advanced energy weapons and some heavier conventional weapons can slow her down and injure her over time.

Enhanced Senses and Nervous System: The bond with the alien entity allows Katherine to move, think, react, and sense on levels that are far beyond that of a normal human being. The entity also monitors the area directly around her, giving her almost a precognitive sense of any threats in her vicinity.

Physical Exertion: Katherine is still a human, despite her incredible alien physiology and fitness levels, and she can tire out in a prolonged battle. Use of her fusion blasts can also drain her stamina if she is not careful.

Non-Armored Form: Though she is still very durable and quite strong in her "human" form, Katherine is much more vulnerable outside of her "bio-armor" and can be injured and knocked unconscious with hard blunt force trauma attacks, in addition to heavy doses of knock out gas or tranquilizers, if her enemy can get a dart sharp enough to pierce her tough skin.

Noble Personality: Katherine is noble and heroic to a fault, willing to sacrifice herself if need be in order to save innocents or a friend. This can be exploited by her enemies and can be used to lure her into traps.

Katherine is sometimes reserved and shy, not wanting to get very close with too many given the fact she lost her entire squadron and many close friends in the Rikti War, in addition to the fact she must keep the secret of her powers safe. Those she is close to see her as a friendly and noble person who is very supportive and outgoing. Katherine can be quiet and tactful, but she also knows how to unwind and have a good time when the moment calls for it.

Allies:

While she doesn't have that many friends in her normal persona, Katherine has several close friends in the super hero community, most notably Blue Steel and the Crimson Valkyrie. Through Crimson she has worked with and befriended both Silver Falcon and the Chicago based heroine Astra Girl.

So this is an idea I've been kicking around for the last few months and finally decided to give it a try. The weekend spent watching Top Gun scenes, Ace Combat 7 game play footage, and listening to old school UN Squadron and Area 88 soundtracks, while catching up on a few episodes of Area 88(Great anime btw if you haven't seen it, give it a try!) I figured why not give it a shot. So here we have a super heroine based on my all time favorite fighter plane, the F-14 Tomcat. I tried to incorporate elements of its design and abilities into her character, and hopefully did a decent job of it. Not sure how often you'll see Katherine/Tomcat, but this was fun to create and I think she makes a fun addition to my stable of OCs.
