To me, Paper Mario: The Thousand Year Door is heavily influenced by Shakespeare's poems, more specifically Macbeth, hence why the plot is so good.

There is also more coincidences that links the game to Macbeth, such as how the Shadow Queen kills Grodus and leaves his head on the floor, just like how Macbeth is beheaded, or how the entire game is a play, similar to Shakespeare's theaters.
