Description
In 29 ABY, a majority of planets aligned with the Centrist faction in the Galactic Senate and under the leadership of Senator Carise Sindian of Arkanis, formally seceded from the New Republic to form the public façade and political bloc of an Imperial successor state known as the First Order, while its military and spiritual (Sith) branches remained hidden in the depths of the Unknown Regions and from the prying eyes of the Republic.
The departure of the Centrist planets sparked a new secessionist crisis in the galaxy as the Senate had mixed reactions on how best to respond. Many, including Chancellor Borsk Fey'lya welcomed the departure as a sign that the Republic has finally cleared away any nostalgia of pro-Imperial sentiment, while others realized that this act could only be the start of the return of their draconian predecessor and argued that oversight was needed.
One of the biggest flaws of the New Republic was that they were overzealous when it came to avoiding the mistakes of the past, and for that, they truly believed that taking any military action against the First Order would be a repeat of when the Old Republic declared war on the seceding Confederacy of Independent Systems that launched the devastating Clone Wars and the rise of the Galactic Empire 50 years earlier.
Therefore the Chancellor and the Senate installed a policy of non-aggression and appeasement, believing that the First Order wished to be left to their own accord and would not violate the Galactic Concordance and provoke the Republic.
This decision frustrated many officers in Republic Command, including former Chancellor Leia Organa Solo and Fleet Admiral Gial Ackbar.
