its not about the actual smoothness/roughness of the snake, its about the scale type. Aestivus has keeled scales [most of the time] while the Vernalis has unkeeled scales. its just a distinction between species.

A lot of people hate snakes and I can't understand why. They are mostly shy creatures and almost never aggressive. They're not like you see them in movies...

Haha yeah, living in rural North Carolina actually has some good sides to it >< Last summer a full-grown black rat snake somehow made it's way into the only hole in the foundation of our house and was never seen or heard of again X.x
Not to mention that random wild turkey....
Or that mother fox and her kits....
Or the times when bald eagles were seen perching in our pine trees....
I haven't seen anything like that lately. Maybe my luck's run out?

You're too kind, but the truth is I have very little control over the DOF, since I refuse to use a flash. As a result, the DOF in my images is usually shallow.

I refuse to use a flash too. It may be that I'm just not expert enough with the use of one but I hate the results I get whenever I've used one.
