Description I went to a valley to see the cherry trees blossom this year and I was wanting to draw some, so I did this for a the All-Bleach-fans spring minicontest. TRIA markers and Staedler liners.

I should add--

I don't know exactly why I find this so charming, since I haven't seen Bleach, but I like the gentle warmth of your simplified lines and colors here, and this scene is a perfect balance between held-action poise and transitory stillness, strength and clean sweetness. The zen stillness that is also readiness, and the way cherry blossoms and a warrior's life are both eternal and brief.

As are, of course, the nature of cat-ness vs. their tendency to drop onto us at unexpected moments.

I enjoy some anime, but to my ongoing frustration I came to it too old (I'm now 55) to entirely imprint on a whole new set of, hmm, genre conventions? Not the basic art style so much as the different ways of showing mood shifts--from seriousness to chibi to cartoony scowls where the eyebrows extend six inches past the head, etc. etc.--and the oddities of stylized combat where the average schoolgirl may leap fifty feet into the air and people swing swords that would be too heavy to lift at all, while wearing robes and hair so long you'd lose a fight by tripping on them, and so on. (This is NOT a critique but a regret for my limitations.)

Luckily, I have a nephew who's good at finding me some anime I can enjoy despite my iggerance, from Miyazaki Hayao (of course) to both versions of Hellsing. And a few fanfic writers I met through other fandoms have written good enough stories about, for example, Knight Hunters/Weiss Kreutz(sp?), that the characters were real to me before I saw them on screen, which helped me catch what I was missing.

Hi! Thanks a lot for your very insightful comments, I really appreciate that you got this calm feeling from the sketch. I did this one shortly after I returned from a short trip to el Jerte to watch the cherry blossoms. I had been wanting to do that for ages, but they are only in full bloom for a few days and it's tricky to just hit the spot. When I came back, I had this awesome feeling of peace and I figured out I had to draw something like this.Β

In fact, I'm not much into anime myself, I just can't get the hang of it. It's not the aesthetics, but the way it works, I think. First, you need at least 5 episodes to watch something happens. The worst part, though, is that most of the stuff I've started watching had something fresh at the beginning, different from the rest of the series, but at some point, after maybe 20-30 episodes, suddenly they drop all secondary characters but a few (that would probably be the most popular for a 13 years old kid for obvious reasons) and also all sideline plots and focus on the search for power of the main character: the stronger he gets, the stronger the enemies. From then on, it's just combat, combat, combat and easy jokes.Β

Miyazaki, obviously, is different; any of his works can work as your usual movie, except for the special magic he puts in his movies. I'm kind of partial to Chihiro, but my first favorite was Porco Rosso.Β

In the realm of pure manga, and figuring out what you might like from your comment, I'd advise you to give a try to Naoki Urasawa. Both Monster and 20th Century Boys are really over the top in my opinion

Thanks for the recs! I'll check 'em out.

My first Miyazaki was Totoro. For some reason, I haven't managed to see Porco Rosso yet; thanks for reminding me to get around to it as well.

Awesome Job! Love how Soifon is crouching and holding her zanpakuto. She may look grumpy but she cute to me. Nice job!
