Their armor were based on both the game and the action figures concept art for Athena and Major even some parts of armor do seems Doom (even if they are made by same company). Basically,a disposable extras who were launched from drop pods before EMP weapons disabled large numbers of them except for a lone marine (or a few since expansion set focused on other marines). For a sidenote, the lore written in the image kinda omit Stroggification--a term for captured humans being converted to cyborg warriors and organic machine components in brutal surgery procedures before mind wiping them in order to connect them to Strogg's cybernetic hivemind--as for in-universe PR image and out-of-character not being related to that subject (This being Deviant Art, I would not think about commissioning here). Plus not seeing much Quake 2's marine armor fan art, even on other websites.
