Dion Boucicault's masterpiece, "London Assurance," was first staged in 1841. Here are the two leading ladies: Miss Grace Harkaway and Lady Gay Spanker (no, really - that's her REAL name!). They are both full of surprises and very fun parts - this is a mid 19th century comedy, after all! They are dressed in 1790's attire.

I designed costumes from this delightful comedy for my History of Premodern Theatre class - the medium is watercolor pencil on watercolor paper. Gay's is my attempt at a riding habit & hat (complete with riding crop) and Grace is looking oh-so-feminine, what with her pinks & purples and wee book.
