If you don't mind me asking, how do you achieve that muted, pastel look of the colours? Is there a semi-transparent filter over the finished work, or do you colour that way on-the-fly?

Nah not at all! No transperencies or anything I just go through a selection of colours in Illustrator till I get a nice combination
