But the LORD said unto Samuel, Look not on his countenance, or on the height of his stature; because I have refused him: for the LORD seeth not as man seeth; for man looketh on the outward appearance, but the LORD looketh on the heart. 1 Sam 16:7

With the fragility of life, how much do we allow ourselves to feel? Do we harden or turn away from others' desperation? Do we break with someone else's every tear? It's such a narrow path to navigate. I want to stay tender in a calloused world, but I can't carry the weight of a destroyed humanity on my lone shoulders.

In the process of drawing this, I discovered John Bauer, and his illustrations of trolls are fabulous.
