Description My first attempt at drawing something in a steam-punkey way. I'm not sure if it even looks right or captures the spirit of steam punk BUT the friend I drew it for likes it so nuts to that.

I'm rather proud of it, actually.
I drew it for my friend Tenshinchigi's character in D&D which is a scythe wielding elf cleric and her character and mine will be going to a plane filled with constructs and machinery so I felt that we oughtta upgrade our appearances to fit the plane.

It's a pretty big and heavy scythe and to aid the user in swinging it, it's got boiler built into the head and a few switches to release the steam through the valves to give it a quick boost in speed and power when swinging. it can slowly release the steam to make a temporary screen for escape or combat purposes (Ie. Confusing the fuck out of whatever it is you're fighting)

(special credit goes to my good buddy Carty for helping me come up with just how it operates and Megan for givin' me some art critique)

I'm amused at how many MMO comments there are for this particular weapon. You may have a future for design. You could also pitch this idea to a company

I like the design on this very much, especially the cog shape it gives with those grooves. The implementation of the steam engine is also always nice.

I think you would be better off just bludgeoning them to death with this : D.

I really do like it though, steam punk stuff always looks good when its done well like this.

I used the idea of this in a sketch I did... I'm not sure if thats a against the rules here or what but have a look if you like. [link]

It's fine as long as credit for ideas are given where it's due.

It's an interesting Design, but there seems to be a few tender looking bits of machinery on the inside of the blade, which would affect it's combat use.

I've always thought scythes have been terribly inefficient as a weapon in general. When you swing, if you don't have the target in close to you, you're just going to catch them on the tip of the scythe, outside of that range you're going to cut them with the outside edge which ought to be sharpened. Trying to slash them with the inner edge is stupid because that requires them to be close to you, negating some of your range. The head of this scythe curves a little more than a normal blade ought to so it has a bit extra to strike with and not have you gore them with just the tip.

I'm not talking killing.

I'm talking Disarming.

Yes the standard Farm Scythe is a poor Weapon. However, the entire blade still can be used. the point and farther out bits are the Offense, the Inner Blade would be used more for hooking limbs, disarming, and other non-lethal Uses.

Having the piping and what I think looks like a pressure Gage near that part cuts down on the effectiveness of those functions.

there's a 19th century German Fencing Guide where the writer shows the various uses of the traditional Farming scythe in Combat, including using the Innermost part of the blade to Disarm, trip up, and even get the kill.

it's absolutely fascinating, and shows how the Entire scythe can be an effective weapon in Combat.

I'm still laughing at the concept of a steam-powered axe...

"Hurry up! The orcs are closing in on us!"

*pulling on cord*
"Just hang on a sec! I think my axe won't start up! It must be out of coal!"

Anyway, I like the design! The little tubes at the head make it pop!

the steam punk design is a refreshingly new twist to the scythe design the only problem is that the blade doesn't look very sharp (unless your using the top of the blade instead of the underside?)

Crow-of-the-Abyss In reply to elyeli [2009-03-05 03:04:40 +0000 UTC]

THe underside is not sharp. :/ Farming scythes are sharp on the inside edge. If anything on a scythe in real combat would cut.. it'd be the outside edge and the tip since I figure you're not really going to be trying to hook your blade around someone because that'd just draw them closer and you don't want that.

good point, I've seen both styles (in anime though not for real) and each has its advantages. farming scythes are difficult to wield but are unpredictable in combat, this kind would be much easier to use.

Late responce sry
Well i didnt really notice anything wrong, it was very machine like, i like the steam valves, but one thing i love in a steam punk weapon, is a kink of chainsaw part, and the scythe blade looks a bit like chainsaw blade teeth.
