932 years ago, Edo period, Japan

samurai were fierce warriors, some skilled enough in the blade could even turn the tide of an entire battle but there were some invaders not even they would brave facing, the yokai invaded from the underworld and plunged the world into an age of darkness that was until the ancient kitsune stepped in, wielding the power of ancient forbidden knowledge and magics they braved the yokai and one member among their ranks was the bravest of them all, kitsune Kazumi "the possessed" wielded a mystical dagger enchanted with the sealing arts of the kitsune able to trap any yokai slain by it's blade within but at the cost of Kazumi's soul being corrupted and tainted with every spirit sealed away within the awful blade and when the battle finally ended and the bells of peace rang out along the world she was racked with curses and corruption, her willpower barely enough to keep the spirits at bay trapped within the blade and her soul as she stepped into her personal dimension at her temple and sealed the gateway behind her.

entering a deep sleep allowing the spirits and corruption to slowly dissipate she was unaware as the world changed, her fellow kitsune falling one by one and their bodies turning to stone as statues standing in memorial, the story of the yokai war and the kitsune fading into obscurity and legend, humans scarred by the war begna to fear the supernatural and even claimed the rogue elemental powers of magic for themselves in protection...but that protection later turned into greed and selfishness, desire spurring them to turn their magic onto eachother often transformative in nature.

when Kazumi awoke free from corruption in modern day she had expected to meet her friends and be celebrated, but was instead met with the polished walls of a concert hall built on the site of her temple... thankfully they had been holding some sort of...con? When she awoke so she caused no stir, although she didn't know what a...cosplay was? Apparently she had quite a good one... but she wandered and learnt and felt anger and disappointment as she found demons crawling their way back to the overworld, humans overtaken by greed and her own sacrifice and those of her friends having been discarded as mere fairytales and kitsune bowing as pets?!...so she vowed to finish the job, seal away all the demons that had re-emerged in harmless forms although she wasn't expecting how powerful humans had become with magic
