Though possessing a mineralized endoskeleton and a passing resemblance to the Terran vertebrates, Bluedeer and other Quadrilobes are in fact most similar to the "Sea Cucumbers" of long-lost Holy Terra, with four lobes surrounding a long central axis.

In a further departure from Terran biology, biological sex for the Bluedeer is less a matter of genetics and more a matter of development. Though individuals can easily be categorized as "male" or "female," all members of this phylum possess both sets of gonads. Through a convoluted series of events not yet fully understood by modern science(including, quite possibly, fetal positioning in the mother's womb), one side of the Bluedeer will become "dominant" and then receive the lion's share of nutrition, becoming the organism's functional sex and the side that it walks upon. It is believed that this is a remnant of Bluedeers' evolutionary history, as the gait of their distant, hermaphroditic ancestors would have left one set of genitals quite literally up in the air and unusable.

As the pictured individual is "male," the semi-vestigial dorsal limbs sport long, shaggy hair for sexual display purposes, in combination with the bony "horns" on the skull.

Herbivorous, social, and maturing quickly, Bluedeer and their close relatives formed the basis for many of the domestic livestock used today.
