Yes it was. I'm trying to conquer my fear of backgrounds and so thought I would do some studies and experiment with my brushes more.

Practice and Patience. I could not always draw like this and everyone starts somewhere. The trick is to study and study hard. Draw what you see infront of you, not what you 'think' you see. Once you have nailed realism, its very easy to simplify it.
