"A mistake when translating red panda from Chinese to English is how we got firefox." The misconception was sparked only from the mistranslation issue. So the red panda isn't commonly called a firefox as a nickname, the only source I could find of them ever being known as firefoxes is from the mistranslation of the famous browser logo and one uncredited website. (The browser logo is also very clearly a red fox and not a red panda.)
