I always wondered why it was called a "soap opera"

Ok... so funny story. The term "soap opera" comes from the age of the radio when they would broadcast short dramas. Most of the ones that middle class middle aged married women listed to were all sponsored by soap companies. So the most popular ones (with a lot of drama that they could listen to while doing house work) were thus nicknamed "soap operas."

In the early days of TV (and radio before that) daytime dramas were funded by advertisements by soap companies.
