Yes. It's a pun on Beryl gems, which, under certain conditions, can give off a soft luminescence or glow.

They could be but not many would want to get that close to them to enjoy the sights. Bears can be dangerous and I'm not sure I'd be comfortable having one near me in a narrow passageway... worst yet, they are good runners and if they decide to chase us, we'd be screwed, double screwed if they run us off and put us in a position where we lose our bearings and the path we came from (some caves can have multiple paths after all).
