He's from a French comicbook series called "Asterix The Gaul", which isΒ an over-the-top comedy series, and is basically the comicbook equivalent of History of The World Part 1. Obelix is basically the superstrong-best-friend-who-eats-a-lot to the main hero of the series, Asterix. Obelix delivers menhirs for a living (because his name is a pun on "Obelisk"), and his favourite food is roast boar, which is why he carries a boar here.

MMM... Yes. He also fell in a cauldron of magic potion as a baby, giving him his superstrength. In every other translation of the comics, every other character has their name changed to be a pun in that new language (i.e. for the English translation the druid Panoramix has his name changed to Getafix, and the British chieftan Okebos has his name changed to Mykingdomforanos) except for Asterix and Obelix themselves.
The author of the comics, Rene Goscinny, also worked for a time on a run of Lucky Luke, a cowboy comic which did for westerns what Asterix did for ancient history; namely, spoofing it to high heaven.

Lucky Luke is pretty popular in France, and has its following in the Anglosphere as well, but isn't as popular as Asterix, and the entire series isn't translated into English yet, but the first 40 albums have been.
The popularity of Lucky Luke compared to Asterix is like the popularity of the Nome Trilogy compared to Discworld. Namely, it's popular, but not as popular as what made the author successful.

I read a lot. I also use TVTropes on a fairly regular basis. I also own about a dozen-or-so Asterix volumes. I also read through Wikipedia every so often.

I took the red pill, I ventured down the rabbit hole, and entered Wonderland. Now I see vast expanse of Knowledge around me, and do my best to collect it, in a bucket full of holes.
