Description Yet another drawing of the Stargate: Atlantis character.

This is my first charcoal, unless you count the rough sketch or two I did when I was 13. I was looking for a way to get more contrast and blacker blacks, and I really enjoyed it, even if I did manage to drop my sketchbook behind the couch pillows and smear the entire left side. Thank goodness for kneaded erasers.

Black and white charcoal on gray laid paper.

So there's this convention called Nine Worlds and they're doing a thing where fans can ask permission of fan artists they in their fandoms pemission to print out art on home computer and take in as a kind of 'look at how awesome fandom is' thing and was thinking of printing some of your stuff, if you don't mind. Promise I ownt if you don't say yes.

I remember you posting your stuff on LJ back in the hey day of fandom and I'm still as impressed now as I was then and just, your series of SGA drawing are still one of my go to things of what is good fan art and I was hoping to share that with others.

Wonderful job! I love all of your kitty and Atlantis Pictures. Could i use this one as a reference picture for my art class? We're doing charcoal portraits and i think this is a wonderful example. Also I've been wanting to do sheppard for a long time but have never found the time.

Thanks! Glad you liked. And you're welcome to use this as an example or reference if you like. I'd think you'd be happier with a live model or photo for a reference, though -- then you don't have to make all of my mistakes.

Simply astonishing! Truly amazing work! Everything is just perfect, including his fabulous hair. There's something about that hair of his. Every time there's a shot of him in an episode I keep staring at it, wondering how it gets that way
Is there any particular place you find your SGA references? (I also asked this in my comment on McKay)

Thank you! I do love his hair. Have you not seen Joe's explanation of the hair?

I had the good fortune to be in the room when he told the story and we all nearly died laughing.

As to where I find references, well, I drew this one while looking at a screencap from Letters from Pegasus. I really prefer to use screencaps as references rather than promotional photos, which too often are posed or just not the moment I want to depict. I often make my own caps, but there are lots of great places to get caps on the web, including stargatecaps.com

Hope that helps!

Thanks! That's hilarious! I love it But how did you get to be there? Was it some sort of convention? I heard there are a lot of those in the states... They sound great! I went to a Star Wars convention in Holland once, but unfortunately it was a one time thing.

I know exactly what you mean about promotional photos, so I suppose I'll have to start taking screencaps. I do that for other shows, but not for SGA yet. And thanks for the website, I'll check it out.

crysothemis In reply to EldalinSkywalker [2008-01-13 03:46:30 +0000 UTC]

Yes, it was a convention. Creation Entertainment runs Stargate cons in the US, although Joe rarely attends. But this one was in Burbank, and he lives in the area, so I guess he figured why not.

I've actually done a drawing or two from an episode still, but never from headshots. Headshots bore me to tears.

Some of the caps on the website are HD, which is very nice when you're looking for drawing references.

Ah, I'd love to attend a sci-fi con sometimes... it sounds awesome!

Well, I found a good pic of Sheppard and am nearly done drawing it. Haven't found a good one of McKay yet though (guess I'm picky). It's a pity those screencaps are ordered by episode rather than character, that would make it so much easier!

I was going through your gallery again to admire your wonderful drawings when this one caught my eye.

I've done some portait drawing myself in the past, but I always found it so difficult-- especially with charcoal. I seem to be better at drawing more abstract works, so I'm staying away from portraits.

Back to my reason for posting this comment now-- I love love love this portrait so much. It's almost as if John is going to turn his head and look at me-- that's how real he looks. I love your eye for detail (his hair looks touchable) and the way you managed to make the charcoal do what you wanted it to do. Wonderful work.

I'm putting this in my favourites, so I can stare at this portrait over and over again.

Aww, thank you. I'm so glad you liked this one. I will confess that I sketched this one in graphite before doing it in the charcoal because I'd never tried charcoal before, but I was pleasantly surprised that practice in the one medium translated to the other.

Anyway, we'll just have to be mutual admirers, because I love what you do in abstract works -- I love how you use color, and how you combine the abstract with photographs.
