Description .. I am in LOVE!!
I have recently gotten my hands to the full version of Paint Tool SAI and have started to draw and experiment with the tools in there, and all I can say is: This program is the best you can find out there, and it, in my opinion, even beats Photoshop (but mainly because somehow, it doesn't want to work on my Vista for whatever reason..)

This is my second try on colouring in SAI in two days. The first try of me can be found here: [link]
......... argh, I am really at a loss of words of how wonderful I feel now. Because, all of a sudden, I have lost all my fears of digital drawing programs and suddenly started to love my tablet. *___*
Thanks goes to Krisi =Chibi-Twich for her encouragement about the layer-problem: I could never figure out how these were supposed to work up until now, and they really get in handy, even better than I ever considered before! O_O

Well, this single comic page has some history...
I was inspired by , who has made her own fanbook of YuGiOh 5D's, and when I asked her how one makes it because I would love my very own one, she said I should just try it.
At the same time, it was Akira from pixiv who not only inspired me for various sideplots of the Yubel-Short-Stories but also, like Eunbekun, for my very own more professional looking doujin.
well, and currently, I have four subplots of the Yubel-Short-Stories planned. This is from the fourth subplot. I am not entirely sure about the story yet, and I have yet to ask Akira if she would be okay if I use her own creation of "SinYubel" for the plot... but nevertheless, it was a neat experience to make this single page, even if I am not sure about the story just yet. Which is why the speechbubbles are empty yet.
If I would make my own doujin, it probably would be a Kiryu x Aki and Juudai x Yubel mix (maybe since I am tired of the Spiritshipping doujis everywhere).

So yeah, this is my very first trial page. I hope you enjoy, even if it is not yet finished.
Hm... if "Eternal Purity" would look like this......... OoO
I could make a trial page for EP as well if I find the time...

Actually there's no program to beat another since there isn't a perfect program yet but Sai is certainly beter than Photoshop in some aspects.

Well, Sai was especially designed for digital art and provides some really useful features such as invert or rotating the canvas so you can draw/ink/colour like in real life and when it comes to lineart...Sai pwns all the programs. At least all the programs I've used so far xD (Photoshop CS, elements, flash, creldraw and opencanvas) (although my OC is ancient..version 1 or something).
Photoshop has really nice effects and patterns though. If you can combine those two then that's all you need. Sai alone is amazing but extra stuff are welcome, right?

I'm really glad you started using layers! That will help you a lot in the future.
In general you did very well for your first complete digital piece in Sai.

You've mentioned that you used a sketch for the first panel. That is the best thing to do in my opinion. I use sketches 90% of the time. Tablet sketches can come out great sometimes but as you can't see the whole drawing unless you zoom out it makes things harder kinda (and drawing on zoom out won't work). So go for sketch -> digital colouring ^^

Your lineart is fine but you have room for improvement for sure. It's still not completely stale but all you can do is continue practicing it. Using the tablet is not just the same as the pencil and I remember my first days with tablet were like that. My lineart was terrible.

The shading looks quite good and I suggest using the "water tool" next time. You can make some nice soft shading with it. I usually make a hard one and then soften it with the "water tool".

One little tip I can give for digital art is this:
When you start with a sketch resize it and make it big(I usually scan it 1000pixels width and make it 2000..but mostly depends on the size of the sketch. A chibi that it like 500pixels...I'd make it 1000).
Work on the lineart at this big size with the usual brush you use for linearts and then resize the image. Make it slightly smaller.
Then colour/shade and all that and at the end resize the image to the original size you've worked on (or whatever size you want).
Drawings usually look better when you look at them from far away as you can't see things such as the white spots colour pencil leave on the paper. Digital art works with the same logic but in this case you need a smaller image (since you can't see it from far unless you distance yourself from the monitor XD).

I usually keep the original huge size in a .psd file in case I will ever want to edit something or..just to have the original.

One big advantage with digital art is that you can draw your characters and save them as .png files with no background and then you can add them anywhere (in a banner, avatar, new drawing etc.) if you have any program that can drag & drop a file to another. From what I know Sai can't do that...at least I haven't found it yet. I'm still exploring the program as well.

I like the shading. Did you do the shading and blending freehand or use one of the features of Photoshop?

I have made the shadings freehand on Paint Tool SAI.

As a rule, I don't generally like digital art as much as traditional, so I'll not say anything about that.
The expressions are what I like about this, particularly the subtlety of them: the subtle changes from panel to panel really convey a strong mood. Well done!

Crystal-Dream In reply to PallidaPapillio [2010-03-15 07:07:41 +0000 UTC]

hehe, it makes me happy to know that there are still people left who prefer the tradional over the digital still. It gives me hope not to just neglect the tradtional - because, well, nothing is more satisfying than using a real pen, real paper, real tools. Heck, I am not even able to draw without a traditional reference: The first layer I started from was the scan of the picture I originally sketched on paper.

I wouldn't be ashamed of the fact you sketched the bottom layer. It's your art, you should do whatever you think will yield the best result.
Another thing about traditional art is you always can complain about how much better a picture looks in reality.

that is true. with digital art, I really cannot say that.

awesome one!

Thanks alot! and I am still in the learning phase, reading through tutorial and trying to keep things in mind.
The awesome thing about the program is that the tools also think for you. when you have a coloured space, and want to shade it darker, you can just click pure black colour and draw over the space you want to shade and it automatically turns into a darker shade of the colour that was on there before. *_* I have never seen something so intelligent before.
And the brushes that you can install!
And the paper that I now can save! *___* you know, I really hate it to use up too much paper for drawings...
and the tools!! You could colour like using watercolours, or markers, or felt tips or crayons, everything you can imagine! __
I feel so good right now and especially inspired.

Wow, nice to see that SAI is that good for you, XD

If you really like it, I'm lookinf forward to see your stories on SAI, and... EP on SAI? wow, that sounds awesome but... you shouldn't do that 'til you're used to digital drawing, XD

See ya later!

Crystal-Dream In reply to StrikerXE [2010-03-13 20:45:29 +0000 UTC]

hehe, thanks alot.
well, actually, there are some pages of EP which are considered to be a remake already in existence. I might now use SAI to finish these off in no time, whereas I had extreme problems with them in Photoshop.
so, at least one page of EP on SAI, this would be my dream. But then again, there is this EP sidestory called "Tyril and Koudai",that I now plan to colour in SAI soon, once the outlines are done. If I use a hard pencil... and now combining the media... heck, just the single thought of using and merging the media I so love inspires me even more! *__*

Well, EP has evolved since the first pages, story, your way of drawing, everything has evolved...

XD, mix both pencil and digital makes awesome results if you mix them right, , and both of them have its cons and pros, just feel free to do what you like

aaah, come on... your recent page of Sabina was so wonderful, my jaw literally dropped. O_O
I am still just a beginner and have so much to learn. Especially since I don't colour digitally, I am more used to tradional, which also takes less time away.
