“It’s not their pain you’re afraid of. It’s yours, Charles, and, frightening as it may be, their pain will make you stronger if you allow yourself to feel it. Embrace it. It will make you more powerful than you ever imagined. It's the greatest gift we have that can bear pain without breaking and it's born from the most human power. Hope. Please, Charles, we need you to hope again.”
X-Men: Days Of Future Past, X-Men’s answer to Terminator 2 and my absolute favourite movie of the entire film series. … Well, if we actually include the spin-offs, it’s my second favourite. We’ll get to my actual favourite movie eventually.
For now, let’s focus on this movie that serves as the grand finale for the original cast that acts as the grand finale for the franchise despite more movies being made afterwards with the new cast, features a lot of great moments that gave me hope for the franchise’s future both great and disappointing, and… it’s better than The Snyder Cut. Yeah, I said it and I don’t regret it. As for a few certain haters of mine that I know are going to bitch about that opinion…
Nicholas Angel from Hot Fuzz: Deal with it!
Danny Butterman from Hot Fuzz: Yeah, motherfucker~!
If you actually do know me well enough, you know I’m a sucker for grand finale type stories like The Lord Of The Rings: The Return Of The King, Avengers: Endgame, and the Series 4 finale of Doctor Who and this movie is another example of that type of story and even uses time travel as a bonus. While it’s your basic time travel story about preventing a dark future from ever happening, I think they handled the concept well enough without trying to be similar to other movies with the same premise like Terminator. Hell, much like The Wolverine, it has an extended cut that makes me appreciate the movie more than I did when watching the theatrical cut. As for which version I honestly recommend, I’d say The Rogue Cut… but definitely have the theatrical cut on standby since, again, both versions are great. The characters are fine, Logan bounces off of the new cast well enough, the theme by John Ottman continues to be my favourite X-Men theme, and I’d be a complete moron if I didn’t say that the Quicksilver scene is frigging amazing.
All in all, this movie is pretty much the first true peak of The X-Men Film Series and I still love the hell out of it. Next time, it’s time for another redemption movie as Ryan Reynolds gets his second chance at playing The Merc With A Mouth in his first solo movie that’s basically an apology for his portrayal in X-Men Origins. Yeah, it’s finally time for me to actually talk about the first solo movie… about Deadpool.
And now, my favourite joke in the entire movie.
Quicksilver: The told me you control metal. Y’know, my mom once knew a guy who could do that…
Magneto: *gives Peter a brief “Wait, what?” look*
