I know I must sound like a pain, but it's for the deer's sake - avoid getting so close to it. The mother tells the baby not to move, which is why the baby seemed unafraid of you. But if you had managed to disturb it enough that it moved, or if you made the area smell too strongly of humans, or even if the mother had simply seen you by her baby, it could lead to the baby getting abandoned so it would die of hunger or lack of protection from predators.

Sorry, I just thought I should spread the word to nature photographers, so we can protect the subjects of our photos It is a beautiful photo though, so I had to it

Deers arnt afraid of the smell of humans thats a stereotype

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

little--grasshopper In reply to TiroTypo [2012-07-20 10:22:22 +0000 UTC]

Not afraid, no, but it can prevent them from coming back. The smell can deter them, particularly if it is the smell of a potent man. And I do actually know a fair amount about deer because my mother healed and raised them when she was younger, so my knowledge has come from experience.
Anyway, it is better to be safe than sorry.

I agree ^^ but the fact that if you touch a fawn or hold it or whatever the mother wont abondend it tis be a fact

Yes, I red this also after taking the picture. Well I red that I shouldn't touch it, wich I didn't cause I already thought it may be a wrong thing to do. Also I didn't stay long, i'd say less then a minute cause I didn't really know what would happen if I stayed longer. I didn't knew that I shouldn't even get close. So for the next time I'll grab my telelens, wich i have now, to take some shots instead of going close . Thanks!

Thank you for being understanding I assumed most people have common sense and would not bother wild animals too much but I just thought I would spread the word to make sure. I'm glad you got such a beautiful picture without distressing the baby deer, and thank you for not staying long or touching it

oh my what a shot. those smooth colors go great with the subject. good job!
which equipment did you use?

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

cs4pro In reply to alohadiscordia [2012-05-20 09:51:00 +0000 UTC]

I used a canon 550d with a standard 15-55mm kitlens.
Normally I shoot wildlife with my 70-300mm telelens. But I send it to the fabric cause it needs repairing.
I could get so close to this one tho, that I could easily get some nice shots
Thnx alot!

wow with a 15-55 mm ?
how did you got THAT close to this cutie?
i use a tele as well so i really know to admire you for catching this with only a kitlense.
even more congratulations!

Yea I was also suprised that this little deer just didn't ran away.
I guess i could even though it if I wanted. But I didn't cause I'm not aware of the consequences.
Maybe her/his mother will leave her/him cause of someone touching her/him. So yea, pretty cool to get so close tho
