It was "ceremonial". A Viking funeral in the most strict sense is illegal here as well, BUT what we did do was fill a small wooden boat with personal effects, statemnts, etc. and burn that.

Beautifull photo.
I have actually thought of being burried in this viking way, and even being in the ship. If that's not possible, then I will go just like the men in 'Beowulf and Grendel'. Cremated on top of a sort of pyre.

nice to know somebody got what they wished, viking funerals are rare, and illegal, i hope im given the same luxury as your friend.

This one had help from our local rep to the state house, who my friend had helped get elected for two terms. We had the local fire department there as well as the police. He was not actually in the thing, but we did fill it with memoirs.
It was a very nice moment, and one that has managed to forgo the usual haze that consuming vast amounts of alcohol contributes to my memory.
