A pencil drawing, 20x29cm on paper (daler rowney bristol board) of the mythical Rhinoceros.This is one of the lesser spotted British Rhinos who roam the Yorkshire moors but can only be seen on the night of the longest day. If you go looking for one, stick to the roads and beware the moon!

how do you manage to put so much detail without getting dirty all of the drawing?
I've always had a hard time with that.

Thanks. Sometimes I rest my hand on another bit of paper.
I also have another bit of a3 paper with a square cut out in the middle which I then put over the drawing so I can work on that little area.

I have spent hours observing and drawing elephants, rhinos and other exotic creatures from life and you have truly captured the texture well! Where did you go to get this image? I go to a local zoo a lot. It sounds like you are driving into their habitat, that has to be interesting!

Hello there,
I did try to get some good photos of Rhinos from Longleat Safari Park here in England, you can drive amongst them but they weren't close enough. I got this image from a collection of royalty free wildlife stock photos I bought from [link]
I'd love to work from life but the nature of doing the type of drawings I do would make it impossible really.

Oh, yeah, forget getting photo-realism from life with any animal but I what like to do is sit there and do quick gestural drawings, trying to get their movements, behaviors and things like that from life. I even take my DSLR with me to use for reference (which can be an all day thing - waiting for the right behavior). You did good, I like it!
