Awesome review Cudpug!

I saw the episode and I was surprised. It was really fun, entertaining and it had a pretty good morale. I found it interesting that the whole episode was pretty much a friendship lesson of Spike learning his importance to the group. I thought that the gags with Rarity and Pinkie were the best. I believe that it was really clever that they decided to make her a Green Lantern like character. And Pinkie's gags as Fillysecond were really cute and funny.

But for me the one who stole the show was Mane-iac. I don't know why but I really like her. The way she's written, the way she behaves she is really creative! Even though she's pretty much a Joker like villain it was very well done. The Hair puns were pretty funny and to be honest It reminded me of Sedusa from Power Puff Girls. And the way she laughed even when she was defeated was kind of adorable.

About the whole thing that the Mane 6 was transported to Maretropolis because the comic book was enchanted I think in a way it makes sense within the story.Β

The only thing I didn't liked was the Flutterhulk part. The joke was fine but her design it took awhile for me to get use to it but her jokes worked pretty well.

Rated-R-PonyStar [2013-12-22 19:13:37 +0000 UTC]

Out of all the episodes that are known, this was the one that I was looking forward to the most. I am a huge comic book nerd and I was not disappointed in this. I had no qualms about the gang being sent into the comic, I actually found the animation pretty cool. The design of Maretropolis feels very comic bookish and the overall plot felt like a classic comic plot you would see in something like the Silver Age, maybe even Golden. The characters and their powers I easily recognized for who they were portraying and fitted their characters each.

First you have Applejack who is obviously based on Wonder Woman, with maybe a bit of Batman in her costume design (Or maybe that's just me). And you can have no better character be Wonder Woman then Applejack. Wonder Woman is known in the DC universe as the Spirit of Truth while Applejack is the Element of Honesty. Both are hard workers who find no task to small or demeaning for them, they hold great emphasis on family (Wonder Woman's entire home Island Themyscira is like on big sister group). And finally, both are good examples for female role models as they are characters with strength, wisdom, and a good heart that show the best qualities of women that prove that they are just as capable and respectable as any man.

Dash is very much based on Thor with some powers based on Storm from X-Men. Both characters have huge amounts of pride, and take loyatly very seriously. They are willing to help others and won't hesitate to use force to battle the forces of evil. Both are headstrong and have had to go through lessons in humility to become greater individuals. Plus, it's actually refreshing to see Dash not be the "fastest" thing alive in a super hero concept.

Pinkie is the Flash. Enough needs to be said there.

Rarity was very ingenious of the writers. She's the Green Lantern of the group, but instead of a ring she has bracelets that can create whatever she wills for them to create. However, she's more based on the Star Sapphire Corps, another lantern corps in the DC universe whose powers are based on Love in the Emotional Spectrum. And Rarity, is a perfect candidate for this. She focuses on matters of the heart, bringing beauty and trying to make everything around her look lovely. She wants other ponies to feel loved and adored by giving them dresses and styles that will show who they are on the inside and outside.

Fluttershy is the Hulk, and her part was my favorite. And Fluttershy herself makes a pretty good comparison to Bruce Banner, who is a nice guy that only wants to live in peace, but has anger issues. And we've seen that Fluttershy has her moments where all her bottling of her rage does get unleashed and she'll turn a complete 180 of her personality and this makes her the perfect Hulk Character.

Twilight was very hard to figure out but I finally realized that she was based on Cyclops from the X-men. One would think she's based on a magic based character like Zatanna or Dr. Fate, but her powers are limited to certain energy blast from her horn, sort of like Cyclops Optic Blasts. I think the metal surrounding Twilight's horn is kind of based on the Ruby Visor that Cyclops needs to use to keep his powers in check, otherwise they are always on and shooting out. This can also be a shout out to Twilight's exam where she didn't have control of her powers at first. Plus, Cyclops is the leader of the X-Men. Twilight is leader of the mane six. It fits.

Spike is obviously based on Robin, but the joking idea for a time was that Robin was Batman's damsel in distress. Spike and Robin share a lot of similarities in that they are the background character in a sense despite being seen a lot in the show, but that Spike dreams of being a hero or somebody in important. Spike is worried that he'll be the useless one for comic relief and while many times that is true, we've seen that Spike has come through for the girls on more then one occasion even before this episodes, he just needed the confidence boost to do so. Interestingly enough, Spike is the one who is the first to help the group out in the new world because of his knowledge. It's because of him that they know where they are, how to escape, and what each of their powers do, thus helping them adjust. And, of course, Spike gets his big hero moment when he gives a wicked entry kick to the bad guy that frees the others. Like Robin, Spike has a lot of potential and I hope that we see him grow more as a character over time.

The Mane-iac I love because it's a very big shoutout to the Joker with the abilities of Doctor Octopus. They even gave her the original backstory of the Joker, that's just awesome! She laughs like him (Sure no Mark Hamil, but hey get what you can), speaks and monologues like him, and is as crazy as him. She even laughs after she is defeated, something the Joker did often when he lost.

The action was supurb, showing all the powers at their finest and the story's conclusion ended at a grand scale. I like the mentioning of "Enchanted Comics", kind of nice.

Grade: A

This is my favorite episode of all season and maybe in my top ten. I just wish there was more comic references, but I got enough to make me happy.

I really donΒ΄t know what to make of this episode. The premise was stupid but it was well executed.I liked that the characters had a very good balance of screentime and I love how they used Rarity as a Ersatz-Green Lantern, was very fitting to her creative personality. But since when do superhero comic books exist in Equestria? Enchanted or not, that seems like an anachronism to me, like throwing a digital watch into Lord of the Rings.

I agree that the premise was fairly ridiculous, although I found it hard to knock the episode down based on that central premise when the actual execution was done well. I suppose I'd argue that I don't like the journey, but I think the destination was good.

In my own opinion, "Power Ponies" was a somewhat welcoming but largely indifferent episode. It was substandard as a chapter in the story of My Little Pony, but what more would you come to expect from an episode that spends a day inside the story of a Marvel-esk comic book?Β

Very well written review, it's always a pleasure reading your intriguing words.

Thanks for the compliment, friend. I think on its own merits it was well-written (the dialogue; the action sequences), although I do think it was a bit weak having them get sucked into a comic book because 'magic'. It's clear that the show is becoming more of a typical cartoon in its set-up, though, throwing the characters into whacky situations - of the episode which suggest that, I'd say this was one of the better ones.

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

NotDrip In reply to Cuddlepug [2013-12-22 13:10:42 +0000 UTC]

Of course, you put a lot into your reviews. That is to be respected, most definitely.Β

Anyway, I would have to agree with you on the dialogue and actions scenes. They were quite impressive all on their own. I do agree that the magic route they took was an absolute cop out, most definitely. However, I personally believe it was the more suitable of two choices I saw coming. Those being: Magic OR Spike is just having a dream and none of it ever actually happened. My Little Pony has definitely become more cartoonish this season than in ones prior.

However, between "Daring Don't" and "Power Ponies", I'd have to say that I find "Daring Don't" a bit more enjoyable as a brainless cartoon thriller where fiction becomes reality. "Power Ponies" is far from bad, but these nothing really groundbreaking about it I felt. Just like "Flight to the Finish", just far less unlikable.Β

i find the beginning of the episode taking place at the old castle just an annoying tease, it is little more than a blank setting. however i do see that the writers are basically using it as a diving board into some sort of bigger plot element later on...as they are known to do.
