Description Even though I drew it on the same sheet of paper (note the tip of the staff on the left), this picture thankfully hasn't really suffered from my scanner fiddling with the contrast on the colours that it did with Tammy's concept sketch.

Kurru's another of the main characters from my post-Shining Force 3 story, and is actually the first character I created; as such he's undergone a hell of a lot of redesign and redevelopment since I created him back in 2002, in some cases fairly drastically (originally he had no armour whatsoever).

Kurru is a male Kyantol (i.e. dog-person), 22 years of age. He was born and initially raised in Thames Village - the village you pass through and save the villagers off in Shining Force CD book 2 / Sword Of Hajya (originally he was going to be one of the citizens that the Force rescue, until I moved him to the SHF3 era for this story). After a tragic accident that left him orphaned at the age of 8, he was migrated to Aspinia and raised at a Priest Knight Abbey located between Flagard and Lookover. There he trained to become a Priest Knight (his class) - a soldier skilled in both light magic and protective combat with a duty to protect the people and the soldiers he accompanies (so rather than directly engaging combat, they tend to serve as protectors to those who are or would be engaged). He aims to serve as the team's "voice of reason" and tries to be a neutral judge of all situations, despite obvious signs of stern cynicism and occasional pessimism; this is often countered by Tammy's optimism, and the pair's friendship and relationship over many years has often involved her attempts to challenge his rather bleak outlook on the world around him.

As displayed in the notes and given his place of origin, Kurru's been modelled on the same style of Kyantol as SHFCD/SoH's Sarah (i.e. Elvish ears and a more box-like muzzle). I think I was still toying with having him in SHFCD's era when I initially outfitted him in a purple version of Sarah's armour (arguably my favourite outfit for any Shining series character - visible at Shining Force Central here: [link] ), but it kind of worked to his class when I moved him to SHF3's era and I wound up building the Priest Knight story around this (i.e. Sarah was one of the inital founders of the order and it spread across the Shining world, and many of its active soldiers wear variants of this armour). One deliberate difference was making his hair peak out from under his mirte; it still kinda annoys me that you can't see any sign of Sarah's hair under her mirte.

Later along the line, I decided that Kurru should be much less of a "Paladin clone" (i.e. swordsman with healing magic), and expanded the Priest Knight order into being more of a "protectors of the people" group (thus focussing more on the more chivalrous aspect that "knight" entails). I decided to reduce Kurru's healing abilities, and make him much more of a protective character; his speciality is in defending others and evading enemy attacks, and I decided he should be more of an acrobat in regards to his combat tactics (i.e. extremely agile and skilled at dodging enemy blows - or at least getting them to do minimal damage). His weapons are both a sabre or short sword for attacking (using stances and moves similar to sabre-style fencing), and an ankh which he wields like a tonfa/baton for blocking blows as well as acrobatic moves and attacks.

Because of this redevelopment, his armour needed changing (Sarah's armour didn't allow for much mobility) - it went through a few rethinks before I settled on this style; rather than having a solid "skirt" going from waist to ankles, I split it into front-back-side plates and shin bracers, giving him a lot more mobility. I also gave some chainmail to his chest , and a chin/muzzle strap to fix his mirte to his head.

Although it's a bit hard to see in the picture, his fur is actually coloured white with a hint of peach (most notable around his hair and neck); he's not meant to look "albino" with that and his dark red eyes, but he's not far off. His hair is an all round straight and slightly scruffy style that reaches his neck.

I haven't fully coloured it for a couple of technical reasons:
- I wasn't happy with trying to draw the ring at the head of his ankh, so left this uncoloured/unfinished (for all due purposes, it would be coloured the same metal grey as the rest of the ankh and be about the same size as seen here)
- Kurru's about 6 foot tall, and most of his strength and muscle power is in his legs complimenting his acrobatic style). Unfortunately I ran out of paper to draw his legs as long as they should be, so originally settled with drawing his feet as low as able, making him look a bit stumpier than he should be. Colouring only so far down hides this a little.

The picture was drawn (and notes were written) with a 2B mechanical pencil, and it was coloured with regular colouring pencils.

so he's more like a ranger. whatever the case he looks pretty cool... i can't help but think of a burmecian soldier(final fantasy 9) when i see it though must be the ears and hat

Wouldn't really have said he was a ranger... I forget the exact definition of the class in the generic fantasy world (in the Shining world it's more of an unpromoted horse archer, which doesn't fit at all!), but IIRC it's more of an outdoors- and forest-based soldier with ranged attacks (i.e. light archery) and no magic skills. Kurru's not really got any sort of ranged skills (aside from some of his magic, which he tends to avoid using due to his unreliability with it), and is more of a CQB fighter... I'd probably compare him more to an escort or personal bodyguard, crossed with a mercenary (in regards to his services being "for hire if he likes the cause"), crossed with a bit of an unpredictable Monk in terms of his magic. It's a bit of an iffy class to generalise... which is pretty much the way I wanted his class to turn out.

Funny you should mention the Burmecian soldiers... they didn't really have any influence on Kurru's design (as explained it mostly came from SHFCD's Sarah), but my original designs for Hark - one of the other characters from the story - inadvertently took a fair bit from Freya, given he's also a bipedal spear wielding furry that wears a steepled hat. I've been toying with tweaking and redesigning him recently to try and make the similarities to Freya less obvious - he's more or less next on the list of concept sketches I want to get completed and uploaded.

sorry haha, the only ranger class that came to mind was from the baldur's gate series, my fault for generalizing. baldur's gate rangers basically are slightly weaker fighters and learn basic druid/cleric spells like cure light wounds.

Ah, gotcha. That's not too far off his class, though whilst he's weaker in terms of attacking, his defensive power is pretty solid (given his armour and evasive skills) so he's a tough fighter there. He's not necessarily got basic magic (he does pick up some low levels of Bolt/Spark as he progresses through the story, as well as unseen higher levels of Quick), but his unpredictability with magic makes him cautious with using anything too powerful (so although he may attempt to cast a powerful spell, there's a chance that he actually casts a stronger or weaker version... or perhaps the wrong spell completely!).
