The Pope's Pit Viper (which is sometimes still classified as Popeia popeiorum) is a typical and rather small viper that occurs in the far western and northern ranges of Thailand. The males have bright red eyes, as well as a bi-coloured lateral stripe that is just as red below and white above; in females, the lateral stripe is often white only and sometimes missing entirely. Like all Pit Vipers, it is venomous and the hemotoxic venom of this species is considered very potent and dangerous.

The Pope's Pit Viper is among the vipers that can be difficult to be identified in the wild as there are a few other Pit Viper species that look virtually identical, like Stejneger's Pit Viper (Trimeresurus stejnegeri) from which it can be only distinguished through the very different shapes of their hemipenes (their ranges, however, do not overlap).

This snake was named after American herpetologist Clifford H. Pope and his wife Sarah H. Pope; Clifford H. Pope is credited for the famous phrase "Snakes are first cowards, then bluffers, and last of all warriors."
