“Why are you sad?” I asked, back then.
I remember the look you gave me,
Calculating…sad.
“I’m not sad. I’m happy.” You replied
And turned your head.
Did you think you fooled me?
I was only a child, back then.
But I understood the differences
Between Sad and Happy.

It puzzled me.
It saddened me.
Because you were sad.

I held your hand and told you, “I love you.”
You smiled, then mirrored my phrase.
But I was not happy.
Because you were sad.
I hugged you, then let go,
But you held on.
And I knew you were sad.

The next time you spoke to me.
It was of the Past.
You faced me in the beginning.
But, slowly, your head turned.
I was happy
Because you trusted me.
But my heart clenched
At what you had to suffer.

‘The Past is past
And future unwritten.
It is the Present,
That is important.
Do not waste it on
Regretting the Past,
Nor planning the Future.
Live.’

I wanted to tell you that,
But no words came.

Will you forgive me?
For my attempts having little results?
For letting your smiles lose their warmth?
For your laughter losing their soul?
And eyes their shine?

I try harder.
But the more I reach out,
The further away you are.
If I shout, will you hear?
If I touch, will you respond?

It scares me,
Thinking like this.
So will you come back
And comfort me?
Please, don’t leave me.
