Description "...He whistled a tune to the window, and who should be waiting there
But the landlord's black-eyed daughter--
Bess, the landlord's daughter--
Plaiting a dark red love-knot into her long black hair...."

-The Highwayman, Alfred Noyes.

This piece was inspired by the Alfred Noyes poem, which is probably one of my favourite pieces of writing!

I wanted to draw my vision of Bess the Landlords Daughter, who I always imagined to have a innocent beauty about her.

If you've read the poem, then you know the story doesn't end well so I made her skin pale to give her a ghostly appearance. I know her eyes are described as black, but I gave them a redish tint to symbolise the love as well as the deathly aspects of the poem.

In reality, Dick Turpin's Horse was apparently named Black Bess so I titled the piece as such. Hopefully she doesn't look too much like a horse (lol)

I hope at some point to create a character concept for the Highwayman himself

Done in watercolours and pencil then edited slightly on photoshop.

honestly, I don't even like poetry, that one just spoke to me and she's perfect and it just kind of works.

Really lovely drawing of Bess, I think your vision of her fits her really well. I really like the fact you drew her eyes red, it really ads to the feel. Her expression is really beautiful, and I really love the way you drew her hair.
I remember playing Bess whilst studying the poem several years ago... and no, the story doesn't end well.
Again, really beautiful drawing.

Thankyou so much! I'm really happy you think I did the character justice, and that the red eyes was a good move x
