Well, if you use polymer clay like FIMO or Sculpey, it's important to have clean hands and wash them constantly, because it picks up any dirt like crazy O_O And smooth it constantly while sculpting, the fingerprints left on figurine can drive you crazy. Use a wire or foil for armature inside the figurine, it will make it more stable as it tends to lose its form, especially in standing figures. Some tools: sharp knife, roller, needle, special tools for sculpting are super helping, but we mostly use our fingers anyway

Oh wow i did not know the dirt and finger print thing thanks!
I used to only have cheap kiddy airdry clay but i invested in some bake - able clay
And haven't gotten around to using it yet so good lol.
I did use to use those fuzzy pipe cleaners as a kid as my air dry ones would not stick together / hold.
It worked my "Dragon" i made from it is still standing to this day lol. while the one made with just clay , just recently fell apart u.u'
It was fine and dandy this whole time stored in my room and now it's like i desecrated some thousand year old fossil...WOOPS!
