Description Up for a limited time. Then I might scrap it.
I also will probably reedit it.

I went to the skate park yesterday with friends who came into town and took photos. It was my first time ever taking any sort of action shots so they didn't turn out as good as I wished but I got a few good shots.

I hope you like it.

Stevo skate boarding.

Oh. Advanced? That means I get to be critical and stuff.

Having taken numerous action shots of various sporting activities, the one thing I maintain throughout the whole of it is composition.

The background of the photo is a little busy, with the trees shooting up across the sky and the building line angling off at an awkward degree. Don't know what your ISO was, but you might want to speed it up, as it looks like the picture's been sharpened after a hard blur in some places, especially around the subject.

My suggestion? Shoot more sports and get lower to make the skateboarder look higher. Action shots are tricky, and they take practice.

Just don't forget about your composition in the process.

Composition? no shit... that's important in any picture.

Most of the blurry-ness looks like PS... The ISO shouldn't be any faster, because I can already tell it's pretty grainy.

Skateboarding is nothing like shooting a soccer game, or any sport. Skateboarding is as much of a sport as ballet, it doesn't have points or goals. It's more like a type of art. Certain tricks are beautiful for different reasons, and you have to know those reasons. You have to understand the trick, because anyone can just get low and try to make the skater look higher. Not every skater has equal style either, his style looks sloppy.

As for how to improve this composition, I don't think anyone plans on cutting down the trees, so obviously they are gonna be there. You'd have to either work with the background elements or use a larger aperture to shorten the DOF. A larger aperture would also let you increase the shutter speed.

The face is important, so I'm glad you didn't take a picture of his but. His face is dark though...

I'm barely scratching the surface of skateboard photography... leaving out the whole variable of lighting. It's 10 times more complicated than a studio, because you have to deal with ambient light, flash duration, your max flash sync, and using equipment that's portable.

In conclusion, I sound like a jerk.
