These things are much harder in the NES version than the Famicom version since the controller on the NES lacks a speaker.

Yep! Though the ones that I particularly despise are the ones from the original game- I was reminded of the fiends in a recent play-through with a friend of mine.
The only thing more terrifying than their appearance is the damage they deal to your hearts. xD
