Description It seems like general consensus is that this design is off, or downright bad.

But I... don't mind it. Maybe it helps that I've no real attachment to Sonic as a franchise or character. But it looks alright to me.

It's leagues behind Detective Pikachu; I'd protect that little guy with my life. But this design for Sonic still has so much more character than the photorealistic CG versions of characters from Dumbo and The Lion King.

And honestly? I'm kinda interested to see where this goes, which is more than I can say for Disney's offerings for this year.

its the photorealism that is whats off, like if this was the pre-boom sonic, just with shaders and such added to make it look like it fitted in the real world, then it'd be more accepted, but going with this overly "realistic" sonic design, it doesn't look like sonic but instead looks like some weird mutated human that has discovered they can go faster than Usain bolt, its not the "sonic" the world knows, and thats where the problems lie.

He's not that photorealistic. Not compared to some of the PokΓ©mon from Detective Pikachu or the animals from the Disney remakes.

Yeah, there are a few alterations, especially around the eyes and arms. But to say he's a "weird mutated human"? You could say the same about the original design, considering Sonic has always been bipedal and his arms had a similar colour tone to human skin...

thing is, its more human looking than most sonic iterations, almost like they got a child to wear a white ping pong ball suit, but the thing is, with the later designs for games and cartoons, theres an air of it being more animal based, flesh coloured arms or not, even the boom one, which has the most "human" looking design bodywise, still retains that certain look of not being that human-like.

the eyes just look plain creepy

and i know its nowhere near photorealistic as detective pikachu (which gotta say, looks bloody amazing), never said it was, but the thing is, with detective pikachu, it feels like they are devoted to the film because of how good they look and how close they are to the source material, it just doesn't feel, witht he sonic mesh, like they are all that fussed about it yaknow? and thats why i bring up the shaders point, as even with the boom mesh, with the right lighting and rendering, that could look like he exists in the real world, but adding all that fur, making hhe body look more human, and those creepy ass eyes, it kills the look and means it can't be held in the same realm as detective pikachu, and thats what's annoying, like i'd never call myself a "sonic fanboy" but i do appreciate the designs of the characters, and when it goes so far off like they have, it just confuses me, its part of the reason i can't get into boom, its too far off the base material design-wise, but it at least doesn't look like some form of really poor fan-render.

either way, i'm not wanting to turn this into a longhaul discussion, was just putting across what i feel most would be thinking, as its kind of how i feel about it. i don't outright hate it, just feel its not quite there yet.

I honestly think the character design's in Dumbo and The Lion King look miles better than Sonic's design here, but to each their own I suppose. As for Sonic,Β I'd rank his design either a 4 or 5/10. Give him proper gloves and fix his shoes.Β Maybe make his eyes a little bigger and make his body a little skinnier too.

The main reason I say this is better is because it feels cartoony. It feels expressive.

I don't get that feeling from the remakes of Dumbo or The Lion King. They feel far too much like real animals to be as charismatic and charming as Sonic, Detective Pikachu or the original versions of the movies they're remaking.

Take away the voices of Dumbo, Simba and Mufasa, put them in a herd of lions/elephants and you really wouldn't be able to distinguish them from the rest of their respective groups.

Only, a baby elephant with larger than average ears isn't that difficult to spot and Dumbo doesn't have a voice...

That being said, I agree with you completely about the photo-realistic designs for the upcoming Lion King remake. They just don't replicate the presence, gravitas and personalities of the animated Mufasa, Simba and Scar.

Good point. Bringing up Dumbo while ignoring the ears didn't really help my point .
