Your Alex Mercer is the anti-drama bomb personified. Perhaps, to freshen things up, you could have him mingle with folks outside the Normandy; say, for instance, the Citadel Council, Krogan tribesmen, or Terminus System slavers. I wonder what those batarians would think of Mercer's special brand of "getting to know" people.
