Description I loved how this spider was using it's multiple legs to spread a sheet of silk across it's prey.

Amazing shot. It's very rare to see such detail, especially spider silk in use.

Yeah, I was totally amazed by this one was well!  And it wasn't even with my macro lens, these guys are so big

Wow! How large are they, on your best estimate?

Maybe 1cm body, 2-3 cm with legs?

That is rather large.

You are one brave man for getting to  close to that spider.  It's a fascinating piece, I had always wondered where exactly the silk comes from!

Heh heh.  It was a 300mm lens and cropped, but I did hit the minimum focusing distance (~4ft) Much smaller and less scary than those golden-silk orbweavers

Thanks!

Great minds think alike. I do the same thing with those monsters.

I found out how sturdy those webs are the hard way. Got a face full of one when I was chasing my grandma's steer.

I always imagine that they're going to be mad at me for destroying their home and attack my face when I do that. But I have to problem picking up crab sliders and daddy long legs. Go figure.

it's absolutely stunning. I've never seen them 'at work'.. with the tiny spider silk threads coming out of their.. arse? ... I'm no big fan of spiders but this is gorgeous

congrats on the shot, excellent eye (and reflexes?)... the colours and composition rock too.

perfect

Incredible shot! Even the silk coming out of its spinnerets is very easily seen; definitely not an easy moment to capture!

CyclicalCore In reply to VoadorChama [2014-01-23 14:29:03 +0000 UTC]

Thanks! The difficulty was 1: The wind blowing the spider/web so auto-focus was tricky, 2: Hitting the minimum focusing distance on the lens so autofocus would fail, and 3: The spider being so small in the viewfinder that auto-focus had trouble finding it as it blew around.

So I have like 40 shots of this spider and at least half are out of focus

That's the fun bit of photography; getting 50 bad shots of something to find that one good shot. Takes a lot of persistence, for sure. Spiders, especially; they jerk all over the place.

Thanks again I wish I had pulled out the macro lens for this but I was testing out my new telephoto lens.  The "softness" still looks appealing in this picture though
