Actually I understand like 30% of that song 
And as far as Snapes character goes you can`t forget that Dumbledore believed in people changing and really needed someone to protect his young warrior aka Harry during his time at Hogwarts. On one side it maybe was traumatic to some children but on the other hand potions are kinda dangerous so that kind of teacher might work better than expected (pupils need to be careful etc etc).

I never looked on it from that perspective.
Unfortunately Dumbledore wasn't that accurate
in all of his decisions (extreme example:
T. M. Riddle). But I guess everybody can get
hoodwinked by certain amoral people.

Lol, the ruler stabbing (or even pencil stabbing) still goes on in second grade, I assure you. They also seem incapable of lining up and walking in a neat line. Everyone always fights to be first. Sigh... I do not miss school teaching in the least
