Long ago, there was a horrific war that lay waste to an entire planet, taking every life and soul along with it. Calling it a war would, in fact, be an understatement, for it was in fact a massacre, one that the legendary Pokemon Giratina was responsible for. Giratina was banished for its awful act, and Arceus created a new world with a new protector, and that protector was Mew.

Despite many centuries passing since the horrible incident, the lost lives were not forgotten as Mew was sure to create a festival in their honour. On the final Sunday of every year, a sacred festival begins, one where people and Pokemon come together to thank their protector and remember those who were lost. For the week following that final Sunday, people decorate their homes with brightly coloured lanterns and candles to ward away the darkness and welcome in a bright new year for all to enjoy. On New Year's Eve every family involved makes a paper lantern and lights it before letting it off into the sky, to help lost spirits find their way to the heavens and brighten the first night of a new year. On New Year's Day it is customary to share a hearty meal and exchange gifts and other sentiments to start the New Year in good faith with all others, and in a thanks to Mew people blow bubbles as the sun rises on the first day of the new year. The Sunday after, the decorations come down and are stored to be used again in the next year.
