Description Created for the Cottingley Fairies contest at

The challenge was to create an old black and white picture inspired by the famous Cottengley Fairies photos from 1917. The story, and the photos taken by the two cousins, Elsie and Frances, can be seen here: [link]

This was an interesting challenge for me because usually I try to make photos look like paintings, but this had to keep its photographic qualities. Of course, I'm also not known for my monochromatic works, so dealing with black and white was a bit out of my comfort zone. Still, this was very fun and I'm actually very pleased with how it turned out.

ETA 12/26: Thank you for everyone who voted for me! I won third place in the contest.

how cute
i like the photo tinting and i love the texture of the photo.
unless this is your intention, the fairy is very big compared to the size of the model.

Thanks! I agree the fairy is a little big, but she has such a darling grin I couldn't bear to make it smaller!

Lovely!
It really looks old! Especially little girl!
only thing that i would change is the size of the fairy... it's just a little bit too big, but maybe that is just me! In my head fairies are smaller! Other then that it's absolutely perfect!

well Deb let me tell you WOW!!! this is perfect. it looks exactly like one of the photos of the Cottingley Fairies. the only reason i know it is not is by the date at the bottom hahahaha you got the soft blur and the grain old photos have. you have the cracks and scratches perfectly. i really don't see any improvements needed at all dear your piece is perfect. here is to you

This is beautifully manipulated Deborah - the photo looks old and of course all the elements are correct (expect nothing less from you ). This contest is developing new talents all over the place - did you use trial and error or tutorials/tips to get the old photo look? I used whatever I could find around dA and elsewhere, lol - hopefully all worth it in the end
Good luck in the contest

Thank you so much, m'dear! I used trail and error to get the old photo look and did quite a bit of searching before finding a texture overlay that did what I needed it to do! lol
