Description
There are very few places in Athens that are worth the time to photograph them. The city is, from an architectural point of view, a very bleak landscape, dull and chaotic. Still there are a few notable exceptions, and this is one of them. The National Library of Greece .
I've wanted to photograph this building for quite a while, but the conditions were never quite right. Finally today, i decided to give it another try even though the sky was too cloudy for a long sxposure (you couldn't see any blue at all). As i arrived, it seemed that is was futile to try.It had statrted to rain, and a demostration was coming towards my way. I decided to hang around and wait... and then, my patience paid out.
The sky cleared just enough for me to take this photo, while i used my coat to cover the camera and my self. I must have looked like the photographers of the 40's covered by their black sheet!
Still, i think this was worth the trouble
And some info on the building: The National Library of Greece is situated near the center of city of Athens. It was designed by the Danish architect Theophil Freiherr von Hansen, as part of his famous Trilogy of neo-classical buildings including the Academy of Athens and the original building of the Athens University. Among the library's holdings are a codex of the four Gospels attributed to the scribe Matthew; uncial codex with a fragment Gospel of Matthew from 6th century (Uncial 094), Flora Graeca Sibthorpiana by English botanist John Sibthorp; Rigas' Chart by Rigas Velestinlis; The Large Etymological Dictionary, a historic Byzantine dictionary; and the first publication of Homer's epics and hymns.
