My theory was that Sonic wasn't necessarily shy...he was just turned off by Amy's forward displays of affection, and was waiting for a time when she matured enough to express her feelings with more subtlety.
But...regardless of the reason, the important thing is that Sonic and Amy are able to see eye-to-eye.
