An then Rome destroyed the city and salted the fields...

Makes you wonder how the world had looked if Cathargo had stayed a center of power.

Yep and yes, i think if Carthage had prevailed against Rome the whole world would look a lot different. Could be they wouldn't have been able to create their empire.

With the Middle East/Egypt being late Rome's breadbasket and treasury, this is too true!

Guess they were destined for conflict.

Not sure what you mean by that with in context with Carthage.

At that period in time: yes.

I meant that if Cathargo had existed for longer and Rome had continued to expand, Egypt and the Levant would most like have become two of the areas where their interest crashed the most. Much like Parthia and Rome fought over Mesapotamia for centuries.

Ah, now i get it. Could be.

I thought more or less it was inevitable that they could exist that long without a conflict or more that brings one of them finally down.

Well in the end its rather exhausting discussing it in detail - because there are so many things that could happen.

On a similar note, you also have to wonder how the world would be if barbarian tribes, Celts and Germans, had beaten back Roman expansion, or even destroyed them outright, before the Romans even had a chance to build an empire outside of Italy. So much of the world today is based on Western values the Romans had practiced (Republican style democracy, capitalism, Catholicism, etc etc) thanks in part to the Renaissance, so it does beg the question: what if tribal people had dominated Europe instead of the Romans

Indeed!

The big difference is of course, that Carthage had a high culture, while the northern tribes were... tribes(no offence to my or French forefathers). They had the potential to develop things on their own, but it was Rome's and Greece's culture which inspired them.

You could do a new version showing the empire's rise, conquests, losses and decline.

You mean the rise and decline of Carthage? Well, it could be possible, but the amount of work would be a lot.
Its also rather difficult - to get what i mean, take a look at my The Celts - Iberian Peninsula map.
And i'm not sure if i can make a map with that detail for Northern Africa before 200 BC.
